Port on same side as woofer?

I was just wondering for a DIY sonosub, is there a reason the port cannot be on the same side as the woofer? (i.e. rather than the woofer on the bottom and port on the top - put them both on the bottom)
I have never really seen any plans this way but think it would be much easier to make the woofer act as an end table if the top was solid. (Now can I find a form 24" in diameter or so?)
Just wondering why most of the designs you see have the woofer on the bottom and port on the top.
Michael.
