This one comes straight out of the aol car audio chat room...

**you'd better protect me thomas or i'm gonna run and hide**

"since when did polk audio start promoting bandpass"?

The company of high SQ quality subwoofers -- or at least how they're marketed (and 99% of the time, the db/ dx / momo live up to that standard quite nicely) decide that porting and bandpassing their subwoofers was suddenly a good thing to do?

I'm gonna make sure I attend a lot of audio shows this coming year... and if i see one bandpass box entered in an SQ competition - let alone win... I'll not only give birth to a litter of puppies, but I'll build a bandpass box with 8 old EXII subs and lay it in the bed of my truck just for sh*ts and giggles. I'll run if all off overrated Legacy or Pyle amps too since bandpass doesnt' need a lot of power to get loud... right?

port it if you want spl... bandpass it only if you drive an old 1974 cadillac eldorado with gold rims and neon underneath as well as an alligator steering wheel and pink zebra striped seats... or if for some reason that 23,000 watt Pyramid amp for 39.99 at kmart seemed appealing.

but if you want sq...
get real - go sealed - and play it loud until the woofer's ready to jump 3 feet out of the box (CLEANLY - without distortion)- unless everybody's afraid the speakers can't handle the power... *cough cough*.

i concur. sealed is 1000 times better IMO. everyone that asks me now which is better, i always say sealed. "you can get louder with bandpass, but... it's pretty much crap and rattles"

IT is nice that Polk does provide this forum for us....
    to express our opinions....
    and our concerns....
I agree with origianal Poster...why the lead to bandpass?

Hey ya know what would be even better than just providing us with the forum (which don't get me wrong -- its a great place for swapping ideas and all that good stuff)...

but what would be even more ingenious would be if they listened to what we as a group, say.

you have to assume only the die hards come in here and rant day in day out -- and who better to give the company first hand feedback than the people that drive their product the hardest and with the most passion.

    Power'dByDodge,

The new X-ring by qlogic sucks. So I dont intend to use their .85 model with the x-ring - the next model without though is 1.25 - and the momo 12" reccommend .88 - so what is going ot be the effect if I use the 1.25?

    Circuit guy ---

dude, i would never put a momo in a box bigger than 0.9 PERIOD --- if you load it into a 1.25 then you will probably not be able to run more than 250 watts to it without it sounding odd and if you juice it up you may / will damage the woofer suspension from overexcursion due to incorrect box size.

momo's have been known for needing a "perfect" box. do it 0.88 or dont do it at all.

it takes only like 1 hour to build your own box out of mdf or even high density particle board --- a 7 dollar piece of wood, 2 bucks in screws and an hour of your time = 1 good box that you dont have to worry about.

other boxes you might want to look into www.sounddomain.com sells boxes by a few companies, i'm sure they can find you one that's straight up wood (not plastic like that stupid q logic farse -- i've seen / heard that box... its the dumbest thing god ever put on this earth.. plastic.. gimme a break). box at sounddomain prolly run you about 40 - 50 bucks.

if not. crutchfield.com has some -- if not that.. find a local wood shop or another car audio place --- most decent car audio installation places build their own boxes anyway so you ought be able to find a place close that'll build u a .88 box for a single 12 for like 40-65 bucks.

    g'luck :o)

My MM124 is in 1.1 cu. ft. sealed right now, with a capped port tuned to 50 Hz. The sub has much better low end response (25 Hz) in the bigger box, and when the cap to the port is taken off it's (hopefully) possible to hit the 130 db from the seat for IASCA shows. I'm low- passing the woofer at about 50 Hz with a 24 db/ octave slope.

If you want good all- around response and don't cross your subs over quite that low than stick with .88.

What's the one box style we sell woofers pre- loaded in? I would say that we therefore promote sealed boxes because we realize that it's by far the most popular.

We came up with a bandpass design for the guys who were asking for one. We're playing around with ported designs as well. Just because your opinion is sealed boxes are best means everyone has to use them? The bandpass designs we came up with were the result of many different designs and many hours listening to them. Sealed boxes will offer better SQ but our bandpass boxes sound pretty good- most importantly they don't have the port noise that typically associated with BP boxes- and offer quite a bit of extra output. In a coupe or sedan with the woofer in the trunk and the seats up there won't be a lot of noticable difference anyway (except for how loud it is).

And there have been at least a few cars over the years that used bandpass boxes and won plenty of SQ shows...
