I just added a HSU MBM-12 to my Outlaw LFM-1 EX....
SO AWESOME!!!! IT IS AMAZING!!!!
Flat to 15hz thanks to the Outlaw and my room, but I was missing some chest thump in max extention mode. The HSU MBM-12 delivers SO much chest thump. If you are on the edge about buying one.... TRY IT NOW! So amazingly good. Best mid bass I have ever felt. The drums in Verdi's requim feel like I am playing the freaking drums.
Best audio money I have spent on my HT. I have the MBM right next to my couch, and it is small enough that it fit under my coffee table.

Very nice. Glad to hear you're getting great results. Dr. Hsu appears to be very competent when it comes to making subs.
I'm gonna get me one of those MBM's someday. Other HT priorities are getting in the way.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

Congrats. The spec show 50 - 150 Hz +/- 2 dB. how are you getting it down to 15HZ? Just curious?
Thanksengtaz
I love how music can brighten up a bad day. -

He credits the LFM-1 for the extension I believe. -
if a sub has spec of 50 - 150 usually the it the limit of the speaker and box of that sub, basically what the sub is tuned for. I have heard of tuning sub ports but that is usually in the specs of the sub.
Just curious.engtaz

my SMS-1 shows my LFM-1 EX (maximum extention) totally flat to the bottom of its spectrum, which is a little below 15hz. In Max output the LFM-1 EX goes down to about 22hz -3db, as reported. The MBM-1 takes over at 50hz to 80hz.My Iron Man training/charity blog.

Cool, Im thinking of trying a DIY Mid bass unit and have a couple of questions.Do you low pass filter the LFM at 50hz or is it also operating up to 80hz like the MBM? Also do you have the MBM placed near the listening position?Testing

Whoa... hadn't thought of the DIY option. I should have, since my sub is a DIYer.
OK, GV#27, let's do it. Where can we source a good driver? I think it needs to have different properties than a typical 12" woofer.
If you're interested, start a new thread.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

Well the driver does not have to dig deep as you will want the low end to start rolling off below 50hz so a good 12"car sub in a 1 cubic ft sealed box should fit the bill.I have an Infinity 1242W that I may try in this application.http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_5777_Infinity+Reference+1242W.html#For the amplification you could use a reasonably hi powered plate amp, preferably one with a continuosly variable phase control.Having a means to adjust the phase will be a VERY important feature when trying to blend the mid bass unit to the other sub.EarlyB if you want to throw around some ideas on this we can start a thread.Testing

Here's an excerpt of a reviewer from Secrets of Home Theater & High Fidelity at CES 2007:
One exhibitor, Hsu Research, had a setup that literally stunned me. In the back of the room where I was sitting, right behind my chair, was one of his new designs, called the MBM-12 Mid-Bass Module, that only reproduces the range from 50 to 150 Hz. He had it set for the range of 50 to 80 Hz. Since it is close to the sitting position, it does not have to be turned up very loud, although it has a 350 watt amplifier. The driver is lightweight, so it responds very quickly. The gunfight scene from Open Range was used for the demo, and the gunshots, because of that special woofer (of course, he had his regular subwoofers in there too, for the really low frequencies), sounded as close to real as I have ever heard in a home theater room. The effect stuck with me all afternoon. Anyway, if you ever have the chance to hear this demo at a local home theater show, be sure to sit in on it. Absolutely unbelievable!HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub
