This is probably the most noobiest question, but do you need a HD-DVD player to hear surround sound on your speakers? Or can I just use my good old xbox to play DVD's and still hear the full effect? (I'm thinking about purchasing fxi3's)

You do not need a HD-DVD player to get surround. Don't know a thing about X-boxes. You will need a digital out on the DVD player and a digital input on your receiver/Pre-pro to decode dolby/DTS 5.1. Then you will get the surround seffects the director puts in the film.

Xbox or Xbox360? You can buy cables for Xbox which have optical out (supports Dolby 5.1) - I got the Monster Component cable + Monster Optical cable on Ebay for like $20 total. I don't endorse monster, but that's the only decent cable I could find for original Xbox.

    It's a XBOX, no 360. Do I need a HD TV? I have a regular TV...pretty old tv.

For the original Xbox, you need either the Advanced A/V cable or High Definition A/V cable to get optical out for surround sound. Not only will you get DVDs in surround sound, the vast majority of Xbox games had 5.1 surround as well.

The question is whether you'll be able to find one now that the Xbox is essentially dead.
    Equipment list:
    Onkyo TX-NR3010 9.2 AVR
    Emotiva XPA-3 amp
Polk RTi70 mains, CSi40 center, RTi38 surrounds, RTi28 rears and heights
SVS 20-39CS+ subwoofer powered by Crown XLS1500
    Oppo BDP-93 Blu-ray player
    DarbeeVision DVP5000 video processor
    Epson 8500UB 1080p projector
