Quick question for house speakers

Hey guys,
I have a pretty nice setup for my car and have learned all kinds of stuff from the guys over in the car part of this forum , but need some help on possibly getting some house speakers.
I am moving into my college dorm and need some speakers that are in tower format and can be good for parties, but I also like to have the good sound quality. I'm assuming that I'll need to buy a sub so that I can get the clearer sound from the speakers, but was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction.
I don't want to spend too much as it is for a college house I'm sharing with 5 other guys. but I would like it to sound decent and be able to get loud. Hopefully something that isn't too expensive but is good for the money.
I could look and look but figured you guys would tell me right away or know best. Thanks in advance for the help.
John

A budget of what you would like to spend would be needed. IMHO

ummm.. just how loud do you want these to go exactly?
i'd hate for you to spend some cash and them blow them up on your first party.. then you'd be stuck with dead speakers.. while your friends are all drunk off their asses.
just looking out for ya.. here is what I would do. get yourself a junk pair of garage sale $25 speakers.. and use them for parties. then spend some better cash on good Polk Audio speakers.. then keep them in your closet.. for critical listening or when your gf is over and you wanna make hot monkey love.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I hear ya man, well i don't want to spend too much for that reason, but i figured like there has to be some decent ones out there for under 200 bucks or somethin. I feel like im being cheap which I hate, because I went with nice stuff for my car, but i just dont want to waste money if they get blown by dumb **** drunk kids at my parties you know lol.Polk Momo MMC6500

I can tell from your car system.. that you like good quality sound.. and you've put together a nice rig for you car.. as you've found out speakers need an amp(s) to be loud and sound good. Same goes for home speakers.
If you under power home speakers, they will blow out again and again. and tweeters and drivers aren't cheap.. and some of them are no longer made anymore.. so why run the risk of trashing a $200 pair of speakers? Most home speakers are not made for parties.. plain and simple.
In most of the parties i've been too.. no one cares if your speakers are this brand or that brand.. and long as they are loud.. so go with El Cheap-0 brand and have fun.
that's just my way of thinking. And i can certainly understand wanting good sound.. trust me. i know we all want the best sound out of our speakers and components. but for parties..it's a whole other need.
good luck.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Back in my day the parties were jammed with Cerwin Vega speakers... not sure if they have the same reputation now nor not... They played loud... not refined, but loud and proud.
If you are looking in the polk direction, the R series with a sub or vintage polk like monitor 10s would be great... and the monitor 10s would sound quite nice when you are just listening between parties
If you are considering any speaker, I would look into the JBL Venue series, a wonderful college speaker. They go loud and deep and are respectable enough to satisfy your snooty audiophile friends (there are lots of those in college).
This is the least exspensive venue tower... JBLs are built really well, so I don't see you blowing them up. -
Get on ebay or other online source and find some old Polk speakers, or go to Frys where they have a bunch of decent Polk and JBL floor standers for under $200 a pair out the door. You can listen to what sound's good on an amp similar to what you will use to drive them at home.
Have to agree with danger boy though - if you like music loud, better to spend nearly all your money on a clean amp and buy cheapo garage sale speakers. Just a thought. kn
