recommendations for HT receiver

I'm in the market for a new HT receiver because of all the changes in video processing. Right now to change from TVHD to DVD I must change the projector input and the audio input. Also if I use my S-VHS or laserdisc I must also change both inputs. I really want a receiver that can up convert everything to a HDMI signal. I want to be able to switch any audio/video singnal with the receievr's remote.
I looked at the Pioneer VSX-82TXS but was concerned that the HDMI cable was compatable with all units. Not sure what that means because I thought HDMI cables were universal. I would also like to use and try the MCACC speaker EQ correction system. I was also concerned with the complexity of set up.
I can spend between $1000 to $2000 for a new unit.
Any advice on receivers would be appreciated.
Thanks

If you want "new new" Yamaha just released new $1200 and $1600, Denon has got some new stuff on the way if it isn't in the stores yet, or Pioneer Elite. If you want a deal, Denons will be a bit harder to find since they have been in a tight inventory spot for a couple of months, but Yamaha didn't...you could probably score a good deal on a 2700 if you aren't hooked on the HD surround issue.
Arcam has the AVR280 in your price range (great sounding stuff, I have an AVR300), NAD has been mentioned. I'm not a Rotel guy at all, so I'm not going there. Sonically inferior to the Japanese stuff above, and $500-1000 more. I've done the head to head, and it wasn't pretty, the dealer just about **** his pants.
That should be enough choices for anyone.System:
VPI Scout/Benz Ace
Sutherland PH2000
Arcam CD72
Yamaha DVD-CX1 (primarily for CD..26 lbs, all BB D/A)
Audioprism Mantissa w/Reference PS
Parasound HCA750 (temporary)
Audiovector M1 Signatures

1.3 is the latest HDMI standard (we think). The Pioneer is not difficult to deploy. Listen to whatever you're going to get BEFORE you purchase unless you can return it without issue. Check out the way each sounds with your speakers in your room. Have fun, we've got the 84 and are extremely pleased. We use it as a pre/pro (as our LSI's are completely powered by external amps hanging off the 84) and the MCACC system is a nice touch. The 84 has 4 HDMI in's (fully configurable) and 1 HDMI out which goes to one of the 2 HDMI in's on our Plasma (the only HDMI cables we've had any luck with are the Blue Jean BJC Series-1 Belden Bonded-Pair HDMI). Just be sure to Listen to all the AVR's you're considering. Good luck, enjoy, and please keep us posted!!Home Theater

Funny how you should mention that:

As a former Sony AVR owner myself, I was surprised by this one.
