Hybrid SACD?

Hi guys, I've started shopping at CD Universe for my first SACD's. What exactly does it mean "hybrid SACD"?

So far I picked Sarah Brightmans' "La Luna" which is a SACD and Pink Floyds DSTOM, which is a hybrid SACD....whatever that means. Am I making a mistake with the Pink Floyd? Should I be looking at a "REAL" SACD as opposed to a hybrid? What's the difference?

It means it has a Redbook layer, in addition to the SACD layer(s). This is so everyone can enjoy the release, not just the resolution crazed audiophile.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

If you're a Brightman fan, you must buy Eden from here: http://www.hifi-cd.com/en/product/item/7884/product_detail.html

Impossible to find anywhere else (new).

Also, I highly recommend "Time to Say Goodbye." Her voice, duets with Andrea Bocelli and Jose Cura, and the London Symphony Orchestrae playing in the background makes this a must buy for all Brightman fans.

SACD started on as single-layer disc. The CD layer and multi-channel surround capability were added later to enhance the format and add compatibility with CD and DVD players. Nowadays, all SACD releases are on hybrid disc.

Of course, if you're a crazed audiophile on the bleeding edge of insanity, there's an ongoing debate of single-layer SACD vs. hybrid SACD. :D

Ok, I've just ordered EDEN from that site. Consider this my first SACD purchase.

Seeing that I am not 100% familiar with the format that is used in both, I asked the question. Thanks for the mature, professional response.

It was a joke Janmike, relax, take a deep Canadien breath.

Let me formally offer my immature, unprofessional response. I haven't heard any difference between a SACD single layer vs SACD Hybrid but I try to view this hobby from reality. I'm sure someone has heard something, somewhere and its really the last thing I care about overall.

Congrats, Joe. One thing about SACD, once they're gone they're gone. I'm still hunting for The Peter Malick Group's "New York City" on SACD featuring a little known singer back then - Norah Jones. I'll have to look on Ebay.china to find it now. On that album, Jone's sings more blues than jazz.

I know, we hear that all the time especially from your southern women. I hope that old flame from Savannah is no where in sight when I hit Georgia in 3weeks. That could be trouble.

First of all, there're only a handful of SACD that were offered in both single-layer and hybrid formats*. I have actually A/B an US single-layer SACD of Dave Brubeck's "Time Out" vs. the European hybrid version (which contains a HDCD-encoded CD layer) that I purchased in Hong Kong. I "think" I heard a very slight advantage for the single-layer SACD, however I really don't think I can't reliably identify which is which. The difference is so very tiny....if it existed at all. Either case, "Time Out" is an awesome sounding SACD.

    * SACDs of the Police and Peter Gabriel are hybrid SACD in contrast to the single-layer versions we get in the States. A number of Sony SACD titles, originally on single-layer SACD, were reissued on hybrid SACD in Europe. The only Sony SACD title in the US that received the reissue treatment on hybrid SACD was the soundtrack to "Titanic".
