better that way,, LOL
I am also a Ham Radio Operator with Antenna's, etc, etc, etc.
The first picture is the little Von Schweikert VR 4 JR's, an EXCELLENT speaker BTW, but I sold em recently.
Very warm and musical they were, imaged like all get out too. -
Tuesday, I think it was, I received my (2) MW6509's back from Polk for being evaluated against the new replacement units. So, I thought this would be a good time to put them back together since I had finished the woodworking on them (refinishing the solid wood tops and sides). I thought before I got too far into it I had better test for "fit" with the woofer crossover with those big a$$ caps being on there. I laid the speakers on their backs, sat the crossover in where it would be bolted down at and placed the passive in its spot. Crap. The 130uf and 56uf caps stuck up too far and the passive wouldn't go in. Man, that sucked. I spent about an hour unsoldering those caps and moving them around to the side (basically) and got the fit I needed. No biggie but it added on an extra hours time to an already "easy hours" time of putting all the drivers back in, etc.
I removed the 2.3's (the ones for my best friend) out of my office and moved the SRS2's back in place of them. Man, those puppies are heavy! At least they slide around on the carpet ok. The SRS2's slide better than the 2.3's since the wood has a new coat of stain/poly on them. It was about 10pm now so I only got an hours listening time and had to hit the sack. Typical of new caps/resistors, they need to be broken in for awhile but sounded noticeably better. You can tell a big difference in the bass control with those big Solen cans in there. Something I noticed even before the recapping is that the SRS2's seem to have more bass extension compared to the 2.3's. And that's comparing them stock to stock. Not that the 2.3's don't sound good because they do and I wish I was keeping them and giving the SRS2's to my friend! (haha) Those SRS2's are definitely keepers. Well, I guess unless a pair of 1.2TL's come along but I am very pleased with the results in these speakers. Now, I am just waiting on the RD0-194's to be available again and I will be done on these.
I'm "on the road" working and won't get back till late tonight and then have to leave tomorrow about noon to work a promo in Arkansas on Saturday so they won't get much break in time while I'm away. Maybe Sunday between games, I can listen to them some and give them some more use. But I thought I'd give an update on the progress. They are basically done sans the new tweeters.Richard? What a bummer!
You did such a great job on those caps
Only one who has re did many crossovers can appreciate how much time and care it took to get the big Solens to work.
