For picture quality (playing standard DVDs) along with multiple Audio connection options, go with the Toshiba XA1 if you don't want to spend a lot.
There is a used one for sale right now in the CLASSIFIEDS. -
I have both. I bought the X360 for games and a media center, but never bought the add on drive. For less than the price of that drive I bought my Toshiba HA-A2 - seemes like a better deal to me.

toshiba XA2 is top of the line hd dvd player. (1080p & 5.1 analog out) uses a REON chip to up-convert standard dvd's. HD-A20 is next in line with 1080i/p and 2 channel analog. then the lower end HD-A2 with 1080i and no analog out. prices fall around $600, $300 and $250, respectively. remember, to up-convert standard dvd's, you need to use hdmi. component looks miraculous with hd dvd, but will not up-convert copyrighted discs. and you can only get lossless audio with hdmi and analog out.
if i were you, i'd get the hd-a20
