But on Yamahamers, when there is a 5.1 signal and the "effect" setting is on,
it automatically does the DD thang.

    Denonophiles help him out.

You have to have digital cable, Direct TV or Dish network. 5.1 is only available with a digital signal.

Monarchy Audio SE100 Delux - mono power amps
    Sony DVP-NS999ES - SACD player
    ADS 1230 - Polk SDA 2B
DIY Stereo Subwoofer towers w/(4) 12 drivers each
    Crown K1 - Subwoofer amp
    Outlaw ICBM - crossover
    Beringher BFD - sub eq

Where is the remote? Where is the $%#$% remote!

Does your cable box offer a digital out?
If so use the digital out connection to your receiver, you may want to check the audio set-up on the cable box and see if you have to tell it to use the digital out. This should do it.

You nailed it hoosier. If the cable box has only analogue outs then no DD possible. In this case Pro Logic is the only choice for surround.

You can try to request a box with this feature. Allot of cable companies have them available, but do not include it on all of their boxes to save $$$$$$. AT&T is one of them.
