BiPole/DiPole or Direct?
Which do you prefer for Side Surrounds in 7.1? And why?
Personally I like being able to localize the sound, but I went on a limb and bought FXi's. Waiting for them to come in, and am going to see how I feel about them. I heard you can set them to bipole and that helps with the localization, so I will probably use them that way. Looking for opinions from others, and what they prefer in the meantime.

Wouldn't the rears help localize? I am no Ht expert, but I would imagine that your fronts and rears are doing much of the work, and that the sides are just there to fill in the gaps in the rear-front imaging.
With that in mind, I would try those FXs there on bipole and see how it goes. I think you are probably correct in that it images better that way.
I think dipole is for when you are using them as rears in a 5.1 setup... for more atmosphere. -
I just finished playing around with fxi30's in back and rti4's on the side.I did not seem to feel any envelopment of sound with this configurement so I swapped backs and sides.The sound really changed as far as the backs were concerned,I could really feel the sound and did not really feel distracted by the sides.Of course these are my ears,but I liked sound better with bi poles on sides.

One thing I heard is if you are using FXi's in the back, they will sound better if you reverse them. Use the side left as your right rear, etc.. -
DIRECT I use RT800i as my rear surrounds, explosions are something to experience in this room

For my 5.0 system, I set up per SACD recommended standard positions -
with Csi-5 as center at 0 degrees (straight ahead from listening postion), with SDS-SRS-2s as fronts (at 30 degrees left/right from center, no toe-in) and using Fxi-5s as sides/rears, each at ~ 110 degrees left/right from center.
I definitely recommend reversing the designated "right" and "left" Fxi-5, so that the midbass driver (and one tweeter) are aimed essentially "direct" at the "sweet spot" (listening position).
From that point, you can experiment whether "dipole" or "bipole" setting works better for you in cases of SACD/DVD-A/DVD with content that has been mixed for some direct sound, or for content mixed with sides/rears strictly ambient information (i.e., reflected sound).

My concern about non-localized sounds is that when a source's sound is meant to be localized-- that may sound wrong. So I'm curious to see how localized side surrond bi/dipoles can be if need-be.
