My Pioneer Elite has a proprietary cable that comes from the receiver and plugs right into the bottom of the iPod .. a direct connection

You could also just use an old analog red/white RCA cable and plus that into the receiver to the mp3 player...but the sound won't be as good as a direct connection..

Onkyo makes a good iPod dock. Arcam arguably makes the best.

There is an official Zune home AV pack. It comes with a dock, AV cables (RCA for audio and composite for video) and a remote.

I have it, it works great. Will work with any AVR.

i dont think that a direct connection is any different for an ipod due to them not having a line out function, unless the new ones do. I dont know of any mp3 player with a digital output, the size of the female adapter would be thicker than 80% of most players out there today. either use RCA to stereo or get an old computer to put your music on an use the digital out of the computer
