I saw a pic of one of the multiplayer maps from Halo just a few minutes ago. To me, anyways, its amazing how much progress graphically has been made from one console to the next.

The Halo map looks downright lousy.

IMO, thats a bad representation of XBOX. Granted I agree, its not quit the graphics of 360 but my Halo doesnt look at all like that 64bit pic you have there. I play Halo all the time on my "regular" xbox, and I enjoy the graphics very much....oh and the music..

Are you sure that the map of Halo is not one that is made for the PC? Because quite honestly I do not think I have ever seen that one before on Halo or Halo 2 for the xbox.

+1 , And not that low grade of graphics..

Come to think of it...that does look like a PC screen shot.

Hang Em High, one of my favorite levels.

Also while there is a huge improvement over the original Xbox it isn't really fair to compare a launch title like Halo.

Halo had been in development for years before its release. They had plenty of time to do what they needed to for this game to be ready. Plus, I am certain that Bungie got to work very closely with the Xbox team to know what hardware they should be programming for.

Anyways, here is a shot of Halo 2.

I would be curious to see some side by side shots of the same scenes. Are there games that are released on both consoles? If so, it would be interesting to see side by side comparison

I don't think there are any games released for each platform. I think the Xbox pretty much got abandoned when the 360 came out.

Though I agree the graphics look great for halo 3, this comparison is not surprising and just not fair. Halo came out in 2001, halo 3 in 2007(hopefully). Not only are they on two different systems but there are 6 years between them. This is like comparing zelda link to the past(SNES) to ocarina of time on the n64....

Now I thought the difference between halo 1 and 2 was surprising. Even though I thought halo was a better game in general, the graphics in halo 2 was IMO a big leap from halo.

There aren't all that many new original XBox games being released now, but there are a lot of games that were released for both XBox and the 360. A quick scan of GameSpot and I found Ratatouille and Eragon as the most recent two, but i'm sure there's many more.

I think that's the whole point of his thread - to show how far we have progressed. It's not like he's saying the original XBOX sucks because the graphics on 360 look better.

It's just an illustration of how far we've come in the last few years.

Yep. My comparisons are fair. I'm just pointing out just how much change can be had in so little time. I think its pretty interesting.

I don't know if Halo is the best example for good graphics.... Compare the best looking xbox game (Panzer Dragoon Orta, imo) and the differences arn't AS huge. Halo was clean graphics, but not detailed in any way.

Maybe it would be a more fair comparison to show a screen of a map in Halo 3:

It's not? I thought we were talking the graphical differences between Xbox and 360? Now I'm just confused. I figured using games in the same series, with the same graphic style, was a more fair comparison than with Gears, which has a totally different look to it.

Regardless, it's good to see developers using the power of the new consoles to design better levels, not just to pretty them up and make them shiny.

Comparing the same game isn't necessarily the best way to compare where we are vs where we were. It's a good way to show how far development in THAT GAME has come along, but not gaming in general. In order to do that, you'd probably want to look at the best overall graphics from different eras.

I believe Halo was widely considered to be one of the better graphics games for the XBOX, and GoW is considered to be one of the better for the 360, although Bioshock is really nice also.

Well, the problem you get into with that is that it's subjective. For instance, a game can have great graphics on a technical level and still look like crap if the art style sucks (see Perfect Dark Zero). The difference in styles between the Halo series (which is futuristic but utilitarian) and Gears (which is modern architecture beat to hell, or "destroyed beauty" as they call it) makes it a bit iffy to me for comparison... whereas comparing from the same series shows a consistency in the design style while also showing what else they could eke out of the hardware to improve upon that same style. It shows what the same company and team can do with the same franchise on differing generations of hardware.

But hey... it's all subjective anyway.
