Apocalypse Now

I just recently bought the complete dossier, and man oh man is this movie not incredible. I actually prefer the original theatrical version, trimming 50 minutes of fat like the french dinner, the playboy bunnies, and the "time magazine" article.

Is it just me or did some of the scenes humanize Kurtz too much? The original hyped him perfect by not showing him - kinda like the shark in Jaws.

Regardless, an amazing film.
And Kilgore... wahahahahha!

I bought it, but haven't had time to watch it yet! I'm waiting to install the theatrical sensory update to my HT.

"I saw a snail slithering on the edge of a straight razor, slithering and surviving. It is my dream, it is my nightmare."

Many of you don't know this, but it was Mr. Bean who actually said this the first time. FFC bought the line to use it in the movie. :p

It's not that new - "Apocalypse Now Redux" came out in 2001, and clocks in at 197 minutes (3 hrs 17 mins) - 53 minutes longer than the original.

The "Complete Dossier" box set comes with the original and Redux versions.

Supposedly there also exists a bootleg "full-length" working version of the movie, something like 289 minutes long. Just silly.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Just watched the redux version again few days ago with my film fan of a daughter. While I thought I liked the director's cut after the first showing, I realize now that the original really is the better version. A few scenes (maybe the playboy rendevous) are effective but the rest take away from the mood and theme of the rest of movie. Listening to my daughter's critiques of some of the scenes only solidified my views. Wonderful film regardless but I think the original is the cleaner, more focused of the two.

I saw this film when it first came out in a theater in NYC's B-way district...didn't think much of it, to tell you the truth. Better films of that war have been made.

This is mostly a loose adaptation of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness almost as paranoid and ethnocentric as Conrad, himself, was? A representation of Western 'paranoia' of the 'other'. It was the beginning of the end for Francis Ford Coppola IMO!

Think about it what has Francis done since then that anyone would rave about? Of course everyone has their opinion..and that's cool!
