Spiked my speakers tonight...wow!
I've been too lazy to spike my Von Schweikert VR4jr's for almost a year now, but I finally got around to it tonight. I am amazed by the difference it made! Everything sounds clearer, tighter, more resolved. Bass and imaging are the biggest improvements, but it really helped everything. Even my wife is stunned by the difference.
Just thought I'd share.

ok. so what do the spikes do for speakers? i have a bit of trouble believing it tightens up the bass and adds imaging. how though? what do the spikes do exactly.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Anchor the speaker to the ground. Better foundation means less energy is wasted due to resonances. More energy... well you get the idea.
My apartment is carpeted so my towers have always used spikes to get a firm foundation, but the hardest part was making sure the spikes were perfectly even. Quality spikes, I hope, would be easier to adjust... I spent hours and my speakers would still wobble slightly. My solution was to turn them upside down and use a flat board set atop the spikes while adjusting.
I am sure 90% of spikes out there are better than the crappy ones that came with my towers.
Are you spiking through carpet or are you on another type of surface? If you are on hardwood, I suggest taking a quarter and setting one under each spike so you can use the spikes on hardwood without poking a bunch of holes. I don't suggest spiking into rubber or anything like that because it would negate the purpose of the spikes. -

That's how I understand it. When you consider a speaker's job is to move air, then I want all (or most) of the energy exerted to do just that, and not move the speaker itself and/or resonate into my floors. Spikes help acheive this goal.Von Schweikert VR4-jr
