What's the advantages of having a ferrite cores on cables and what is AWG?

Could somebody explain the ferrite cores and the advantages please?
Got the AWG part.... My delimma is this...

HDMI DVI cable (24AWG) w/net jacket- 6ft (Gold Plated) (N)

HDMI DVI Cable 28AWG - 6ft w/Ferrite Cores (Gold Plated)
