hey everyone, this is my first post on this site and I'm glad the forum exsist. I have a tad bit of a problem that I'm hoping someone on here can solve.
Last week i bought 1994 polk audio speaker from a pawn shop for $30. After doing some research I found it was the CS150 center speaker located here:

Now after getting home to test it out all looked normal, that is untill I hooked it up.

After turning it on I noticed I was getting any sound from the 4-1/2" subwoofer. The tweeter and the midrange worked fine but no sound from the subwoofer. I decided to remove the subwoofer thinking maybe the speaker wires might be loose, but after taking it out I found that there was no actuall speaker in it, the Coil part was missing.

It just had the front part, or I guessed it's called the relay??? You know the mesh round things that look like the speakers. The subwoofer, that is missing, is model number MW4800 bass radiator. I want to keep this speaker, its in great condition, but what can i do, or were can i find a coil, or another subwoofer or something so my speaker will completely work?? Remember it's a 4 1/2 in subwoofer. That web page link will show you all the specs of the speaker. I'm hopeing someone out there can help me solve this problem. Thanks in advance for any help on this matter.

please read 3rd message i posted on bottom!

Not sure but maybe it's meant to be that way? Is there any wiring for the speaker in question to connect too?

It's a two way design with a passive radiator or bass radiator as it's called in the description, which has no coil as you call it. It compliments the midrange driver by helping produce bass.

    Driver Complement
    Subwoofer 1 - 4-1/2" Diameter (11.43cm)
    MW4800 bass radiator
    Midrange 1 - 4-1/2" Diameter (11.43cm)
    MW4802
    Tweeter 1 - 1" Diameter (2.54cm)
    SL4000

When it is in the cabinet, the air pressure inside the cabinet moves the speaker in and out. (basically it is kind of like a port on a newer speaker) Anyway - if when you are using it, it moves in and out you are fine. If it does not check for any holes or cracks in the cabinet that air may be escaping from.

If you call Polk Customer service they should be able to help you out or explain it better. Basically it is supposed to look that way and as long as it is moving in and out when in the speaker - sounds like it is working as designed.

okay, cool. My friend was saying something about frenqency's, and on how there wouldn't even be a subwoofer in it without a seperate conection to connect it to. Saying it would need a seperate connection going to the speaker if it had one. I guess I understand what he means now. Thanks for clearing it up. Anyway for $30 you can't go wrong.

Polk loved using passive radiators... maybe that is what it is.

I have a thought and wanted to see if it worked. Is it posible to purchase another 4-1/2" midrange and put it into my speaker were the passive subwoofer spot is to give the speaker 2 midranges?? I can almost tell sometimes that the main part of the sound , coming from my center speaker, is coming just from the midrange on the right side. This way the center speaker would have a balance with another midrange in there. So what do you think??

Are you any good at reworking crossovers?

Another option would be to have someone swap the driver and PR around, so that you don't know which side the driver is on. Then, see if you can really hear which side it's coming from.

LOL, nope. I'm pretty new on this stuff. Basicaly all i know how to do is insert the speaker wire into the back of the speaker, lol. But what do you mean reworking crossovers?? Is it something simple or not? if it is, then i would give it a go. Just by how it sounds, it dosn't sound to complicated. Im pretty good at tinkering with things. If i can build computers then surely i can learn to do crossovers. And would you guys, and gals(if there's any on here) be willing to direct me on how to do it or maybe a website on how to do it?

Might be possible, but I wouldn't bother unless you can get the same mid-range driver that's on the other side -- otherwise, they won't match, and it will sound worse than it does now. So I would start by contacting Polk about getting another MW4802, and if you can't, don't bother looking into how it would be done.

Good luck -- BTW, worste-case scenerio: buy the CSR from Crutchfield for $100. Best bang-for-buck center out there! <grin>

It would involve adding/changing components to provide a signal to the second driver. Addtionally, since the cabinet volume was designed for what is in there now, it would most likely have to be altered. Bottom line, if you don't like the speaker, buy one that you do like.

okay, thanks for the advice. I like the speaker very much and if adding to it would mess it up then I'll leave it how it is. I thank it sounds great anyway. Thanks for helping me on this guys.
