Require assistance in building Polk system
Hi,
I am in the process of rebuilding my 7.1 system. I have really bad speakers that I won't talk about to save myself embarassment. Anyway, here is my situation:
I am in a 23 x 10 room. The main priorities for my speakers, in order, will be:
-PS3 gaming
-Music listening
-BD movie watching
The only part of my system that I have purchased so far is my subwoofer: BIC H-100. I am not sure if Polk speakers are the best to pair with this unit, but I have been highly considering the following for my front system:
-RTi4's with a CSi3 ( I can get this NEW for around $304)
-RTi6's with a CSi5 ( I can get this USED for around $450)
A) I have read various reviews, and some people say that the CSi5 has no noticible difference over the CSi3, while others say that the CSi5 will give much much more depth. I have also heard that the CSi5 is more geared towards movies, while the CSi3 is more geared towards music. If this is true-- what should I do? I will certainly be listening to alot of music, but I will be watching a good amount of movies as well.
One other thing I heard was that the CSi5 has different levels of volume on each side due to crossover? I don't understand that.
C) I also need to work on my rears, because it would be a shame leaving what I have now back there while I have something nice in the front. I was also offered FXi3's for my rear, which along with the other USED equipment would cost me $650 shipped. I don't quite understand how those speakers work because they have 2 sides? I need to make it clear that I want 7.1, and my speakers MUST be wall-mountable(at least side and rear).
D)Are Polk speakers good to pair with the H-100? Which ones would you recommend to me? Do one of the options above sound like they would suit me well, or am I aiming completely in the wrong direction? I highly value any input provided to me, and look forward to hearing others suggestions or comments.
Thanks ahead of time!

Is that price for both speakers or just one ?
-
Welcome to Club Polk Patrick.
Go with option 2 and get the FXi3's as well. These help with the surround sounds in movies & also with multichannel music.
Just about everyone who started with a CSI 3 upgraded to the 5, and found it to be a big improvement over the 3. Because it is bigger, it simply offer a fuller sound than the 3. The same is true with bookshelf speakers vs tower speakers.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
Willow- The prices I listed were for pairs of the speakers, so yes- both.
frizz-- Thank you . How about the people who say the 3 is better for music.. why is that true? I could only see the 5 being better since it is bigger, but people say the 3 is better?
Also, what about that volume level thing people are talking about? Is that a problem with the speaker? -
Patrick alot of it simply comes down to personal preference. Some like the 3's & some like the 5's.
Willow noticed a big step up with his 3 once he put a 200wpc Outlaw Monoblock amplifier on it.
The crossovers are designed to be that way, and they sound just fine.
I think you will be very happy with the system you want to setup.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
Frizz-- That's why I'm not too sure what to get. If the 3 is more geared towards music, I would rather have that. But if there is a much bigger difference in depth between the 3 and 5, the 5 might be better....
As you said, it comes down to personal preference. Perhaps there is a store I can go to that I can listen to the speakers in... Do you think Tweeter will carry these? -
Yup! Tweeter is an authorized dealer. The are in the process of phasing out the current RTI line for the newer one.
But take some music that you are very familiar with & go have a listen to all the speakers you are thinking of getting.
With the 5, you will have more depth in the music as well as movies with the 5.
Hearing is believing! Where are you located?Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
Rhode Island... I see you're in Boston, so I'm a stone throw away.
I know they have a Tweeter in Warwick, so I'll have to run by there and see if they have them.
Also, I came across this in another thread on here, though it's from 2 years ago:...Even though the csi5 is a noticeable improvement over the csi3- due to bass extension, powerport, biwiring, etc- IMO it does not constitute DOUBLE the price....the csi3 and fxi3 can handle frequencies at 80hz with aplomb. Same with the RTi4's over the RTi6'.
In my case, the price wouldn't even be double, and I would also be getting the CSi5.. though it is used. I think I just need to hear them myself and decide.
