Hi folks:
I am putting together a home theater and am wondering if it is necessary to upgrade my receiver to HDMI or not. I have a three year old HK receiver with component switching; but no HDMI. I plan to buy an HD70 projector and probably a PS3. Should I upgrade to a newer version with HDMI? If so, do I need HDMI version 1.3, or is any HDMI okay? Please help quickly. Thanks so much.

Not what you asked but something to consider.
I grown to HDMI but my AVR doesn't do DVI or HDMI, so my TV has 2 HDMI inputs and I use a Harmony remote to make it all work. My AVR has been down graded to just AR audio receiver, removing video functions all together.

I too use an "old school (no HDMI)" receiver to provide my audio via optical in jack.
Personally, I think its risky to let the AVR do the HDMI 1080p video switching.
The DVD player and the TV need to talk to each other (hand-shake). Sometimes, this handshake is disturbed by going through the AVR.
Certainly, a direct cable connection is your best bet. No reason to upgrade the receiver. In fact, you are probably better off keeping the audio and video circuits separate. -
I don't like HDMI. It does not lock in and slips out of connection easy. I use optical and coxial for audio anyway. I use it only for dvd upconversion purposes only. If you can afford it go for 1.3v.engtaz
I love how music can brighten up a bad day. -
Another thing to consider is the new audio format Tru HD, it can only be passed through HDMI.
Upconversion is another plus."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche -

I use six coax connections between my blue-ray player and my AVR to pass the HD Audio via "External IN". On my blue-ray, this the best way that you can pass the HD AUDIO. Most AVR's don't have a DAC that is capable of decoding the HD AUDIO. -
This is what I do as well with my HD-XA1 via its multi-channel analog output to my HK's multi channel input.
Works great! My HK has been stripped of almost all functions over the past two years I have a 3 channel amp, never use the tuner, hardly use it's DAC. Pretty much has been turned into a fancy paperweight that powers my back two channels and occassionally does some processingStereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand
