Music, who cares anymore!

Good debate started with an article by Joe Selvin, a San Francisco music critic on the loss of
"music" in the new digital world. Good discussion on the comparison of FM, Vinyl and MP3
broadcast. From the replies, it looks like there are a few out there who are a bit sensitive
about their darling digital world. Check it out on SFgate. Read the comments.

I read the original article when it came out and I was thinking to myself....hey, most of the artists mentioned, even $%&@!* Michael Bolton, is available on SACD.

Of course, no one would care.

I'll admit, I really like the convenience of MP3s, and I love my Zune for what it can do, but compressed files still sound like **** to me compared to the original source.

The only reason I use MP3's is so I don't have to drag my CD collection to work with me. Being able to stuff over 3200 songs into about 23 gigs of hard drive space is way better than trying to drag 270 some odd CDs around to equal that amount of play time.

Yeah, I know 3200 songs in 23 GB of drive space isn't alot but since I rip my own, I use a 320 kbps bitrate.

I was amazed at all the comments. Some were very interesting and there are still many people that care about quality sounding music. I just hope there will always be a market for quality sound.

Well IMO, you dont buy a MP3 player or any portable media for quality audio.

SACD, DVD-A , Vinyl. etc, was made for quality, not MP3.

I think and feel that the portable music playing is simply using music as the wallpaper of your day background sort of thing, I see and talk to folks who do countless other things as the music plays, its almost as if just sitting down and listening to music and doing nothing else is not popular, I know many people including myself who can get so wrapped with the day and issues that relaxing with the music for a few hours just does not happen.

Now if you have a system that is uninvolving no wonder it does happen at all.

Agreed. My ipod is simply a "get through the work day sane" tool....but it does its job rather well so I'll take the compression trade off for right now.

Any chance MP3 will evolve into a higher sound quality format for music?

Why can't this happen? How much more would it cost to improve the quality of MP3 recordings? 50% more? 100% more?

It would be a good option to play an MP3 through a good system and have it sound similar to a CD.

Absolutey possible, in audio the masses get a product moving and the audionerds perfect it to the nth degree. Of course at a cost, its about money.

Or as MM says, everything depends on everything.

    waaaaaaaaaaaaaa

    Madmax.

So it is already somewhat available of course at a cost a 1.29 for a tune, so 10 ten tunes 12.99, seems like the cost of a CD or around it but no CD, you can go buy your own. Hmmmmmmmm............the immediate thing I see is a lack of continuity in the music, a bunch of "best of" downloads with limited back catlogue, I suppose an artist could put the entire songlist up for download though.

I know squat about downloads, never done one, but I see the writing on the wall as far as this being the future for the most folks.

my problem with downloading music.. is you gotta be pretty well organized... i have downloaded music in the past. I haven't done it for like 5 yrs though. anyway... because i'm not real organize.. i have some downloaded music spread over three hard drives on my computer. and now I can't find them anymore. and they've gotten corrupted.. and sound like **** now.

a cd is much easier to manage for me... i either have it or I don't.. and it's not spread out over three hard drives either.

Cost isn't the reason for me on downloading music.. i just don't like doing it.

Thats why I use the same folder for all my music. I even have each artist in its own subfolder.

Nope, because then you lose the advantage of MP3, which is saving space.

However, as space becomes cheaper and cheaper and more compact (4GB micro SD anyone?), we can use better formats than MP3.

I rip all my CD's to .wav format now. Who cares about disk space now-a-days it cheap. .wav sounds WAY better on my rig then .mp3 even at 192K+ that i originally ripped them at.
