Well, I finally got a 300B int. amp from ASL. SON OF A B....!!!!
This is it. IMO, the 300B is the best sounding tubes I've heard so far. My other amps use EL34, 6V6, 6F6 and the monster 6C33. NONE of them can come close to the tone of 300B. Now I understand why Dr. Harvey Rosenberg (aka Dr. Gizmo) call the 300B KING TONE. The only tube I've heard that can come close in tone is the EL34.
Those who are thinking about trying out SET, should seriously consider the 300B tube. The sound of "directly heated triode" is the most beautiful. The cathode is on the heaters themselves.
I was using another SET amp before the new int. The mono blocks I was using previously put out 20w/ch. That's mega power for a SET amp. I've had the new int. for about a month and haven't hooked the mono blocks back up yet. The 300B is way too addictive. It sounds so much more real. Soundstaging, seperation of instruments, air and tone is superior to my other amps.
The strengths of the 300B tube outweighs the weaknesses. Dynamics is not as powerful, bass don't dig as deep and it has less HF extension. But I'm still satisfied with the bass coming out of the La Scala without a subwoofer. But again, the tone is pure insanity. I never even used the word "tone" before to describe tubes but after hearing the 300B, it made me listen in a different way.
I never thought I'd have this kind of sound quality so soon.
This new int makes me forget that I'm listening to a stereo everytime I listen. I don't even think about tube rolling and upgrading anymore. Well, I'd like to upgrade the Valve Art 300B to some EH but no rush.
So try some 300B based units. You might fall in love with the sound. I've never heard anything like it.

You know I can't be too far away with talk like this.
I read the 300B tubes were originally made for the first amplifiers in movie theaters and for telephone use. They put a bit of a spotlight on the vocal range, some more than others.
I bet back in the day they would have **** themselves if they knew how they were going to be used in the 21st century! And how much they would cost.
Which tubes do you have? If that spotlight on the vocals is too much the Electroharmonix tubes don't emphasize it quite as much.
Damn, got me thinking about those horns again...

Avantgarde horns, 300b tubes, thats the kinda crap I want... -
HTR and Gidrah,
You should definitely try them if you get the chance. It's one of those things in audio, where if you love tubes, you should try it out.
Madmax,
Yeah, I believe it was Western Electric tubes that powered some big stuff in movie theaters using the 300B. I hear the WE tubes last years and years.
Here's the scary part I forgot to mention in the original post. Don't know how much my gear retailed in US$ but in CAD$, the 6C33 mono blocks retailed for $3k and the 300B int. amp retailed for $1K. I like the int more.
I'm currently using Valve Art 300B right now. The reason I want to try the the EH is because they tried to copy the Western Electric design. It looks quite similar. So the next tubes will either be EH or JJ. Don't have money for Sophia Electric and KR yet and definitely don't have money for WE.
You're right. The spotlight is in the mids. The presence is incredible.
Just saw your signature. One of my audio dealer's friend was at the shop when I went and he was telling me that he sold his Wilson speakers and Krell amps to get some tubes and Avantgarde. -
I have a few different brands you can try if you want. One is definitely an EH and the other one (I think) is a Sophia. These two are so different in sound that you just have to pick which works best.
