I need to get a surge protector for my Cinenova amp but I need to make sure that it isn't a power conditioner also. The cinenova has a built in power conditioner (according the the manual) and adding a conditioner can affect performance. Any reccomendations? I don't want anything too crazy but would like to protect the AMP from power spikes etc...

It looks like these are also power conditioners though. You used one with your Cinenova without issues? Plus they seem a little pricy.

I would suggest something like the surge suppressors built into duplex wall plates that just replace the wall plate on a standard AC outlet.
They contain 3 MOV's for protection but have minimal filtering(usual a single capacitor from line to neutral) so it will not limit the current available to your Cinenova.Leviton also makes a complete duplex receptical with built in surge suppressors.

Your amp is pricey too, and it deserves the cleanest, un-impeded electricity you can give it. They might be expensive, but they are worth the money. If you look to go used, try to get a Hydra or Guardian that was made within the last year. There were some moderate revisions done just before that, and the current Guardians are on par with the Hydras 2 years ago.

The problem with using power conditioners on large power amps is they may not be able to supply enough current. Therefore it restricts the amps ability to reach its maximum power levels.
There are some power conditioners such as the massive Taurus units that will be fine but they are expensive.

That is the reason the Shunyata pieces are so expensive. They don't limit the current flowing through them. That is why so many people use them on high current amplifiers and subwoofers.

What about something like a high current ultimate outlet from PS Audio?

I personally preferred the sound with my Cinenova plugged directly into a dedicated line as opposed to running through a Monster line conditioner. When I got my BPT balanced power unit I much preferred the Cinenova being hooked into the BPT. Never really gave to much thought to surges.

    GV,

sorry no link. Tim Rawson sells most of his stuff through Agon and custom orders from customers. He has made amps using the 3785 chip, 3886, bpa200, bpa300, ska amps, hypex, Aleph...probably more.

I have had him make me a 3886 gainclone and more recently a BPA200 4ch amp.

    Ah interesting,thanks for the reply.
I really like the chassis he used and wish I could source one or two.:) If I like the the results of my Gainclone I may build a 4 ch version to drive the side/rear surrounds in my HT.The Aleph clones are also very tempting.
