Is Oppo also known as BBK in other countries?

G'day all,

On eBay Oz, we have a BBK branded player, which is meant to be manufactured by Oppo and be the DV-970HD, but named BBK in the overseas market. Below is the link:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320147841510&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com.au%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm37%26satitle%3D320147841510%26category0%3D%26fvi%3D1

Can anyone confirm if this is true or not? It's currently at $86 AUD, so for this player that I have read a lot of Polksters raving about, if it is the real thing, it would be worth the purchase.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, BBK is the parent, Oppo the US arm. Supposedly there are slight differences in features, but the hardware is the same platform and performance ...I don't know if the firmware is the same, but from what I've read on AVS, BBK normally puts out the latest and greatest a year to 6 mos. before Oppo releases.

    Go for it.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE

Got it hooked up today, but it is faulty PLUS this BBK doesn't have all the functionality of the Oppo 970HD. It has no DVD-A, no DTS and through HDMI, the picture keeps dropping out. Swapped with a brand new HDMI cable and made no difference.

The model I received looks identical to the 970, has the SD card slot and is a BBK 988. It also has had the cover removed, as the label that says "void" is torn. This bugger is going back!

Anyway, for about $290 AUD, I can get the new DV-980 shipped to my front door, from Oppo Digitals store. I ended up paying $213 AUD for this "copy", so I might as well get the 980. Anybody got one of these? The fact it has HDMI 1.2a is a bonus for starters.

    Ciao for now.

Hey Ron - no you didn't steer me wrong :D . I really appreciated your advice and had it been fully functional, it would have been a great buy. I was just unlucky that the unit was second hand and faulty :( . When the picture was in between dropping out, I could tell it was very impressive.

I also listened to Mike Oldfiled's Tubular Bells SACD, and it also had a warmer sound than the Yammie DVD-S2500, so if it wasn't faulty, it would have been a great unit. My bug bear was the guy selling advertised it as the same as a 970, but it wasn't. My last rant was more to advise people the BBK 988 isn't a 970.

Anyway, a new 980 should be a good thing right? Thanks again and Ron and I look forward to more advice from you and the other guys on this forum.

I've got a 971, but a friend brought over a 980 to listen to. Unfortunately, he didn't bring an HDMI cable and the 971's DVI out, so we couldn't compare upscaled 1080p PQ. Via component in 720p the color depth was a bit brighter than I prefer, but as I said it wasn't apples to apples. The 980 did sound better than the 971, better DACs and I'm sorely tempted cuz I'd really like SACD, as well as, DVD A. Also, my set is 1080p and I've never experienced it in all it's glory...just 1080i. I would assume the 980s video upscaling capability is nearly as good as the 981, since the 970 was nearly equal to the 971. Sonically, it's a great budget universal.
