RTi with R series

Is the RTi series a good match for R series speakers?

For example RTi6 used as fronts with the rear speakers being R300 and R150 in a 7.1 system...oh and a CSR center channel.

These speakers would not sound the same. If say you had a CSi3 or CSi5 and had a matched front soundstage you could prabably get away with it.

So simply not a good match in which case I'm probably better off just getting another set of R150 to complete the 7.1 instead of trying to find a better pair of fronts. Right?

On a side thought would the Polk R50 make a good match?

btw...thank you for your reply it's nice not to be totally ignored, threes a charm I guess, though my questions may not be the best

I have some of the same issues and some information that may be helpful.

Right now I have R50's in front, CSi25 as center, R300's side surround, and R15 as back surround powered by a Yamaha HTR-6090. For my non-audiophile ears the R50's sound great, significantly better than when I had the R300's as fronts. Given the rock-bottom prices of the R50's from fry's, I'd go for the R50's in your shoes.

However, for the sake of future upgrading, a system that's 90% HT (I realize there's a similar thread going as well) I'm assuming if I replaced my R50's with something along the lines of RTi8's and center with a CSi5, then I could probably get away with the R-series as side and back surround (as duksbak says) until I could upgrade those. Or maybe not have to upgrade at all since the fronts, center, and sub are the most important for HT.

Probably all a pipe dream anyway :)

I used to run Rti70s as fronts, CSi40 as center and R40s as rears. Worked fine. Rs as rears is no big deal, but I would try if possible to have your center match your mains. Having a different timbre across the fronts sounds too odd to me.

I don't see any problem going with RTi8s and Csi3/5 for front stage with the R-series as surrounds.

    Go for it!

I tried it for awhile and it worked great. With the prices of the closeout RTis, it's something to consider. I liked the R50s as well, but they don't hold a candle to the RTis for detail, dynamics or imaging.

    Combo rig:

    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B

They use similar tweeters... not exact, but similar... the monitor 30s and 70s use tweeters even more like the RTi. These are all bright tweeters, and for HT, I think things would be voiced similar enough to work.

Having had a mismatched setup previously, and now having all-matching speakers, I highly recommend getting the R50s (check Fry's) for fronts, unless you want to start upgrading your entire system... in which case sure, get the RTis as the beginning of your upgrade process (and plan to move them rearward later, when you get some RTi8's or RTi10's for new fronts <grin>). But if you want something that matches everything you have now, seamlessly, go with the R50s for fronts (I love mine!).

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

I am really happy with the R300's but since I want to go 7.1 I figure I will plan to go with the R50's though spending $60 for another pair of R150 is tempting on my budget. I can only imagine I'll truly be blown away by their sound if it's better than the R300. I would love to go with the RTi6 but on my tight budget I don't want the tempation to have the temptation to timbermatch everything any time soon.

I have the R15 (5-1/4" bookshelf) they worked well as side-surrounds in a 5.1 setup (with RTi up front) and they work even better now as back-surrounds in a 7.1 setup (with FXi on side).
    - Sony 50"A3000 SXRD; Onkyo TX-SR 805
    - Polk RTi150 mains; CSi30 center; FXi3 surrounds, R15 backs
    - Velodyne CHT-12 subwoofer
