Back rear speakers

Hello, have a simple question, have two FXi50i as rear speakers to go along with my side speakers on a 7.1 set up ( Fx500i ).
I understand that their is hardly any sound coming from the back speakers except on DTS or PL11 anyways thinking of getting some cheap Pioneer Bookshelf DIRECT speakers to replace the Fx500i, has any one on this forum tried this? This way the rear sound would be facing toward the front.

It seems to me that users split pretty much down the middle as far as directional/bipole rears. It you have walls to the left and right of you, I'd stick with the bipoles because they'll reflect better. If one or both sides are open, go with directional monitors.

That is just the problem, about 10 from the back right speaker there is stair wall opening (not fully opened just the door entrance sort of speak leading to the house). If I was going to replace with direct speakers it would be a set of pioneers bookshelf from Circuit City can always try it within the return policy of the store.

I have a large room with a window on one side wall and then the other side wall has a stairway, the entryway, and the kitchen. I went from 5.1 with bookshelves on the side to FXi3 on the side and I am quite pleased with the results.
If I could describe the difference.. with direct speakers on the sides it was like "hey sound is coming from that wall". With dipoles it's like "there are no walls"!- Sony 50"A3000 SXRD; Onkyo TX-SR 805

Walk, thanks for the response but talking about the rear 2 speakers not the side speakers.

I have direct speakers as back surrounds. The little Polk M10's (from CC) are working perfectly as the back surrounds.
Direct for back, dipole for sides.

Just got done, sort of testing a direct back speaker a Pioneer and left my Polk FX50 this way was listening at both rear speakers and watching the Fugitive movie, while the wreck of the train scene and did not noticed that much difference then remember that had to re balance the speakers with my receiver so that the Pioneer would be set right, to get a correct reading or volume set from it.
Rethinking of putting my Fxi50 in the rear as usual but installing them on a wall platform so that the woofer & tweeter would be facing forward as a bookshelf speaker and the cost should be minimal, just the wood and black paint, just a idea. -

They sure sound great on my back wall also, decided to spend the $100 at CC and replaced my Fx50i, so far so good. -
