Ok; here's the story; I spent an hour this morning watching the video of Michael Fremer adjusting the Pro-ject RM5; lucky one of the tables on his video is the same as mine. Then I spent probably a couple of hours adjusting the cartridge. Not an easy task, but using two different tools I can say that it is perfectly adjusted....except for the azimuth (sp); I used the mirror technique, and even i ahd a magnifier glasss I COULD NOT SEE THE DAMN THING; for now I'll assume that it comes well adjusted from the factory, while I get a 4x magnifier.
Connected the table to the phono stage and pre.....and couldn't wait; even though Joe recommended to clean even brand new records, I wanted to hear how it sounded. I have a new sealed copy of Alison Krauss and U.S. "So long, so wrong" in 180 gr, and with just some brushing I started listening. I cannot believe how good the damn thing sounds; the rig sounds completely different; clearer, smoother, and the bass..........my speakers go down to 25 Hz in specs, lower in my room; this record made the bass sound tighter than ever. I heard a couple ofsides and decided to try a used copy I got from Eagles-Live. Started listening Hotel California, and obviously the record has not been cleaned. Noisy as hell. What a perfect opportunity to try the VPI machine. After cleaning it, the record was as quiet as a CD, and again, I was floored by the bass.
Just a couple of initial experiences from a total noob; there is something to the sound of vinyl that makes it such a pleasure to listen. Do I think it will replace CD's in my rig? Don't think so; CD's are so convenient, and to get good sound from vinyl you need to dedicate a lot more effort in cleaning & maintaining....not sure I'll have the "will" for this...we'll see.
That's all for now. Loving the experience._________________________________________________

good work.. and good review... CD's have their place no doubt.. but they can sound harsh after listening to some vinyl.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?
Vancouver, Canada Sept 30th, 2012 - Madonna concert  -
Do the CD's now seem a bit harsher in sound compared to vinyl?
Congratsengtaz

Great Stuff Ric!!!
It is a revelation when done properly. Even Jesse was bowled over when he first heard my vinyl front end. . . I must admit though it didn't take long for him to adjust back to the Tri Vista CD/SACD rig LOL!
Now clean those friggin records before you ruin them and the stylus!!!
I'm looking forward to your further impressions. -

In many cases I find the CD is better than the vinyl, especially SACD. I no longer try to say this is better or that is better, I just enjoy both formats. Too bad John Q never got SACD/DVD-A, too bad the greed of the studio's prevented it from just being the standard, too bad the artist's wanted extra money, too bad too bad too bad, well, we still have vinyl, which aint too bad.
Edit: I just saw a friggen message from the "go green" folks saying if you download your music off the net you can save the fuel it would of taken to deliver the CD..........I am a bad boy as I am sure the records I buy are ruining the planet, nothing to do with folks making millions, yada yada yada.....friggen alligators.

I just read what his playback system consists of, I'm out of breath especially when I see this:
Continuum Audio Labs Criterion turntable + Copperhead tonearm
If I had the change I would own this and the SME 30/2 tables. -

Lust! That is a fairly recent addition, IIRC.
He has the same digital source as I do in his main system. Not a Cary or Wadia, but a most amusing Modwright Sony 9100ES Platinum Signature Truth CD/SACD player.

I remember you telling me that. Now I wonder how a tube CDP is going to sound with my new VTL TL 5.5 as well as the refurb'd Spectral hmmmmm.
