Using floorstanding speakers as surrounds?

Hi,
I'm interested in eventually moving my front speakers (Definitive Tech BP10B towers) to the rear of the room, and then upgrading the front speakers to Definitive Tech BP7000SC towers. Are there any downsides to using floorstanding speakers as surrounds?

Just that they take up more room. Go for it.

Also I think that you would want to raise them much in the way that surrounds are raised....what is the rule 24- 30 inch tweeter height above ear level.
I use floorstanders for rears and am in the process of building a 2 foot pedestals for them....inbetween other projects of course.

Easier placement for sure and helpful if walls are not available. enjoy Normally you get a fuller sound out of floorstanding speakers but it all depends on the speaker.engtaz

Interesting... I had never heard that rule before. By the way you mentioned it, I'm not sure if you were stating the rule or asking for someone to confirm it. Which is why I am going to ask - could someone confirm this? I'm just wondering because right now, I have my tweeters in my (bookshelf) surrounds sitting right at ear level. Should I move them to 24-30 inches above?

If you listen to SACD or all channel then it is not a waste, it is only a preference.engtaz
