Surround sound overkill ?

I just bought a pair of FXi3 off ebay but instead I was shipped RTi6. Before I make a big deal out of it and require lots of shipping charges to correct it, does anyone think they will make adequate, if not superior, surround sound speakers ? I have RT1000p as my mains now so I will keep those there.

If I hook them up, out of phase, will that give me the same "unlocalized" sound that dipolar fxi3 will create ?
Or, if I simply need bipolar will they be 'equal'? They are bulky but for quality sound I can live with it.

I will deal with the 'bait and switch' seller in my own way but these speakers sound nice and seem to cost more. For the little I paid ($125, shipped) they seem like a steal.

please advise,

/K

I have never heard the Fxi3 so keep that in mind but..... I have a pair of RTi6's in my bedroom system and they sound great. It is a fantastic little speaker and I would not hestitate to use it in a surround sound system. (provided you have other RTi speakers...)

don't hook them up out of phase, run em in phase. The 6's will make a great surround speaker and a decent set of fronts when matched with a good sub.

K, welcome. If you're willing to overlook the fact that you weren't sent what you paid for, there are some ways to experiment with using the RTi6s as surrounds. No, connecting them out of phase won't have the effect that you were looking for; they'll be on opposite sides of the room, rather than back-to-back, which would be necessary for the dipole null effect.

One technique which can be quite effective with direct-radiating speakers in dispersing the sound more widely is to position them directly at the sides of the room(it's assumed that these are side surrounds in a 5.1 setup, not back surrounds)to the side of the listener, but instead of pointing them at the listening position aim them at the back wall. Experiment with the angling and forward-backward positioning.

Adaquate ? ... Yes probably more than adaquate ... But I don't think superior to the FXi's for surround duty.

Out of phase may actual localize them more and separate them further from the fronts.

Sell them to me for 150$ and go buy the fxi3!

I used (right now not using them waiting for dad to come back and install crown molding to run cables...) the rti4 as my rears and they did very well, so I could only imagine what the 6s would be like.

Rti6's for $125 shipped, uh.....yeah,keep 'em. I've got 6's as my rears now and like them a lot. A great price for that speaker. I'll eventually be getting the Fxi5's but the 6's hold their own. If you don't like 'em, sell to Willow.
