Floor Speaker Scratchy

I have a Polk home audio floor speaker and after I moved, the speaker went from normal to scratchy. I have a strong feeling that this is was a result of my bad movers and not from over use. I tried new cables, didn't work. I pressed around the speaker, nothing changed. What could be the problem and how do I fix it???

Not sure...had it about 6 years. It's a floor model with only the speaker portion under the top grille. It's black, wood all around on platform. Sorry...

is it one of the blue mid bass drivers that is scratchy? push on the blue part gently to it goes in then gently let it out. do that a few times.. if it's scratchy. i think it's fried.

if it's not scratchy.. then it may be your crossover.. in that case. call Polk audio up and order a new one. i did. and solved my problemo

Is this "scratchy" sound emitted from the tweeter, or one of the woofers?

    From both of the woofers.

And on the woofers that are making the "scratchy" sound, when you press on the cones and release, do you feel any friction whatsoever, or do they push back gently to there original position?

Try this with all woofers with the rig powered down.

Sorry, not familiar with your speakers. It sounds to me like you have fried the coils within the woofers themselves. There should be absolutely NO friction whatsoever.

This happened after I moved. I think the box got dropped since the speaker worked before we moved. How do I take the speaker out of the speaker box? My allen wrenches don't fit...

You may want to remove the woofers and check to see if something internally within the speaker has lodged itself in the path of the cone, but I seriously doubt it if it is on both woofers.

Call Polk, as DB suggested, mention that you are a Polk member and experience some great customer service.

You will have to get the correct sized allen wrench. My speak's look like they are 4-5mm, but I'm not positive. Maybe someone else can chime in on that.

Most Dollar stores carry cheap sets that you can remove them with, if not HD or any hardware store will have them.

Make sure you lay the speaker down...

When you remove the baffle that holds the drivers in - they are pressure fitted in. Absolutely no screws. So if you have it standing up - more issues will occur.

Common sense, but ya know haha

They must of dropped that speaker REALLY hard to dislodge two voice coils, wow...

wow, both drivers? were the movers using it as a tackling dummy?!?!

those speakers are definitly worth getting the 2 new drivers, order em up.
I would complain like hell to the moving company,, but it probably wont get anywhere, cant hurt to ask though, if you only claim the cost of the drivers as the damage, they might reimburse you just to shut you up if your annoying enough.

either way, sad fact is there are always casualties when you move.
