Cutting down sono sub?

I'm playing with the idea of cutting my diy sub down to 39" from 48". SVS told me the set-up I have now (16" x 48") is good for 16hz. It runs low but not alot of pressure. I read the specs. on the 20-39 and think this would be a better balance for music and HT. Any input on this guys?
I'm running a 12.1 svs plus driver, outlaw m200 amp in a room 12' x 25'. The room is NOT a dedicated sound room. It's my living room.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't you get the 12.1 from me, if so, how is it holding up? Come to think out it, I never got to see pics of your final project.

Yes I did. It's holding up great. I love the sound of it. I sm just second guessing my choice of dims. for the tube. I think 20hz would be low enough in range and I would get more pressure with the lower height.

I have the 12.1 also. I have noticed (through trial and error) that if the enclosure is too large, dB's are lost and trying to turn the amp up only over drives the driver to a point of over excursion.

In my opinion I would not go with any enclosure larger than what SVS builds.

39" tall should be plenty large enough. You could go shorter than that , like 36". With a 4" port 12-14" long

I think the max cuft used for that driver is 4cuft. Any larger and you loose punch and dB's.

I built the encloser at the recomendation of SVS's customer service. I can't remember his name, but he was a big help. It is almost a direct copy of the 16-48 ( the big boy/ I may have the # wrong). For the room size, I see most people running 2. I don't have the space for this.

I have a 4" x 17" vent tube, do you think I'll have to change that?

Like I said, I went through alot of DIY trial and error with the 12.1, and found 4cuft to be the best. In sonotube size, I would stick with 36-39" tall. That size it still digs very deep and has a very good dB output.

Yes you might have to shorten the port a few inches, I'de say to around 14". I would not have the port more than 30-40% of the tube.

Get back in touch with SVS, they can point you in the right derection, if you give them the size of the enclosure.

The port is the tune, so to speak. The diameter and length correspond to a given frequency you are trying to reinforce. So it's not just a random thing to chop 3" off (although I've been asked to do this many times:D ).
I'm sure you could find some DIY literature to help you look at the specs of the driver and the the volume of the new tube to come up with a new port tune (size).

I've found that the 25-31 is the best fit for movies and music (IMHO). I tried a pair of 16-48's, and settled on a pair fo the 25-31's. Most music and movies just don't have a lot of sub-25Hz material, and the 16-48's won't play as loud at the same power setting.

I got the final reply from Tom at Svs (Top notch person, just a big help) and I am going to cut the tube to 39" and will keep the 4x17 port. I will looses some bottom end (from 16hz to 20hz) but will gain about 1.5 db and they think this will be a good trade off for the size of my room.

Just got some spare time and I was able to cut the sub down. BIG improvement. The larger encloser was just too much for the size of my room. 2 of the 16 x 48's would have been the hot setup. But it's a living/enterainment room and 2 is just no visable. The bass really fills the room now and it still pulls pretty deep.
