Police Recovered Stolen Car

As I may (or may not) have mentioned on this forum, my car was stolen about a month ago. After blowing a tire, my car veered into the median and the air bags deployed... sucked big time. What sucked worse was that my cell phone wasn't on me at the time. What didn't suck was that I was about a 45 minute walk from my house.... where resided the aforementioned cellular telephone.
So after the jaunt, me and the wifey went back to recover the car only to find it no longer stalled in the median. Fair enough. It was in the middle of the road for crying out loud, so obviously the cops had towed it and it was probably at the impound. A quick call to the impound quickly shifted this "reality" to myth status and so I was forced to file a stolen car report.
Bummer of course, because I had just paid the sucker off within the last year.
Bought new at the time. Five year deal. Took it hard on the APR being just out of college and whatnot. To add insult to injury, I downgraded my insurance to minimum after the deal was up... as so many do. Or so I've heard. Or maybe I'm just stooooopid.
Anyhoo... I get a call from the coppers late yesterday afternoon informing me that they had found my car. Had the car towed to my house by an affable enough fella who did the 10 mile job for a clean fifty spot.
So here's the question of the hour (and thank you for making it this far, dear reader)... but first the facts:
The car is a '99 Ford Escort.
About 150,000 miles.
Wrecked pretty bad. Front end jacked. Side jacked. Body is pretty much unsalvagable.
Starts fine. Transmission's fine. Engine should be fine.
The aforementioned "affable tow truck operator" suggested a few places to call to get some cabbage out of this whole sordid ordeal.
Any of you have any ballpark figures I can work with? As I have no earthly idea what to expect and/or demand in this area. Hasn't happened to me before and hopefully, will never happen to me again.
Gracias,
Jason and his Poor, Pitiful, Destroyed Escort

I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Well, it's good you got it back.
You're in a bit of a **** spot. Mostly because, they probably didn't catch the perps, and if they did, they don't have any scratch to give you, so suing them is a waste of time.
You can try to get money from your insurance company, but they'll end up jacking your rates harder than your car got jacked.
I got hit by a drunk driver in a similar car years back. High miles, just paid off, lowered insurance. **** filed bankruptcy on me, which means NO SOUP FOR YOU when all is said and done. Trying to get any cheddar out of the insurance company would have been futile, so me and my backside ate that one. -
That's the thing...
I wanna see how much cheddar I can get from a body shop, junk yard, wrecker or hobo.I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. Did the damage occur while it was stolen or during your possession? If you take it to a junk yard they may give $500.00 or less and they will sell the individual parts for up to 1500.00 or more. I'm not sure of the demand on Escorts so it could be lower or higher. Anyway, figure, they are going to give $500.00
Now, if the damage to the vehicle occurred while it was stolen, take it to an auto shop and get an estimate. If they say it will take $2000.00 to fix and your deductible is $500.00, you now have 1500.00 in your pocket plus another 500.00 by selling to the yard, which leaves you 2K in your pocket. Of course, you are supposed to use the insurance funds for getting the vehicle repaired... Oops! You would also have to file a claim with your insurance company. If you have a clean record, one claim most likely will not hurt you especially at that dollar amount. I think you said you went with liability only so that means you get nothing from the insurance and your back to $500.00 -

If you're buying a new car, you might want to get in one of those push, pull, or drag scams and let them deal with it.
You won't get much from a salvage yard. -
That's right... minimum coverage. So the insurance claim is out.
About half the damage was done by me. More was done by the "perps".
So you're thinking about $500? I'd take it. I was guessing that figure myself.I never had it like this where I grew up. Elaborate on "not much", as one man's "not much" is another man's "jackpot".
Ancient Chinese proverb, in case you were wondering.
And like I said... I wasn't expecting to ever see this thing again anyway. How many stolen cars are recovered in the city after a month? If you can't haggle with them, and know what they're saying, you'll end up biting on a low ball figure. They'll throw some terms at you and you'll just nod your head even though you don't know what the hell they're talking about.
The engine, transmission, and all that are 'fine' -- but unless someone here can verify exactly what that means, there's no way you can get an accurate number. -

Any easy way to find out is to go to a junk yard and ask them if they have an engine\tranny\radiator for an 89 escort and see what they come up with as far as price. You'll need to know the size of the engine. (like a 1.8L 4 cylinder for example) Not knowing at least the basics of what you need and they'll smell sucker!
Go in with a wad of Redman in your mouth and repeat the following "I need a 1.9L 4 cylinder with a tranny and not the tranny with b00bies and a crankshaft if you know what I mean"
You'll then get a ball park of what you can get. If the prices of those parts are cheap, then just try using it as a bargaining chip when purchasing another car at the dealer -
If it had been worth anything at all for parts do you think it would have been recovered? You probably won't get enough to cover the cost of the tow. Put it out on the street and maybe it will get stolen again. Problem solved."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

True...but one caveat...be prepared to prove the value to the IRS cause they are scrutinizing this particular deduction VERY closely."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

ahh, I believe IRS may have closed that loophole. There needs to be a statement of how much the junker is really worth not just the blue book like new price.

Escorts are very common. The junk yard probably has all they need. I'm guessing you won't get more than $50 to $100. It's just scrap steel at this point.

Must be nice to live in your part of the country. The salvage yards here only give anywhere from $50-125 even if the car is running. So $500 would be like striking gold!! If you file a claim with the Insurance Co. and the repairs are more than the car is worth you get what the car is worth. Don't know too many Escorts that are worth $2000 so I don't know how he is going to put $1500 in his pocket, and they keep the car.
Sounds the damage is extensive so your best bet is to contact your insurance co. and see what they say. I can pretty much guarantee they will say it's totaled and try to give you a low ball number; don't be afraid to negotiate. If you don't like their answer then try to sell it as a parts car in the local paper, craigs list etc., and as a last resort call the salvage yard as they will most likely give you the least amount for it.

Well then I must have missed that...........then using the insurance is not an option. Part it out in the local paper or craigslist."Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience.
