Can anybody recommend a decent phono preamp?
If not, can I hook a pre into a pre's tape loop? I understand that this wouldn't be the best option, but will it work?

No, it won't work. You can bag a simple, yet effective phono pre on ebay for around $25. A step up to the Nad and Parasound models will take you to $110 or so....

Crutchfield has one for $50, and Parts Express has one for, I think, $80.

I looked at the one from parts express for $69. It looks like a good deal. Rolls makes it and most of their stuff is good pro audio stuff. One cool thing about it is that it is DC powered with a wall adaptor. You could use it off batteries for some extra cleanness possibly.

I have the radio shack "little rat" preamp. it's pretty good, actually very good for 25 bones. check out the vinyl area on audioasylum for more info.
