In the last century my neighbor invited me over for a taste of cutting edge HT 2.0 and laserdisc. His CRT projector was under a coffee table.

The movie title is long forgotten but I do remember the sharp picture and larger than life HBO intro on his screen.

    hbolc5.jpg

I still have my laserdisc player. They gave the best picture at that time. I wish they were back because there was no BS intro about copyrights, no previews, no this button can't be used now, you could copy the movie on to tape, had great suround sound, hard to make a scratch that affected the picture and they were letterboxed with commentaries. Simple.

Also they were big and had a laser rot problem

I started in 1988 with a used Sony PJ that was also a large coffee table that used a curved screen. I paid $100 for it. There was only one good seating position with the curved screen. I hated curved screen and put up a slide projector screen and dealt with the distortion at the four corners. I could now have 4 people watch the TV.

Next was the ceiling mounted used advent ($500) with the umbilical cord remote. This one needed constant convergance adjustment but the picture was bigger and more focused on the flat sceen than the Sony.

Finally I got a new RCA ($1400) ceiling mounted PJ that was a BIG improvement over all the rest. Convergance propertly done produced a good picture on the four corners on my new 10' screen. The screen is really important.

After 5 years with the RCA (needed 3 new tubes) I went with the NEC HD PJ for $4000. I have had this PJ for about 4 years now and 3 bulbs. Much better picture, easy to set up. I would never use a CRT again even if it were free (well maybe if it had automatic convergence). Sorry. To much work to keep the picture converged because as the tubes age they drift. Also these projectors would vibrate when playing the movies loud. Never could stop these vibrations from the CRT projector.

    Have a blast.

Thanks. How was the NEC projector? High-def on the Sony I have looks absolutely stunning, would probably be even better on a NEC.

Yes, it's a lot of work to keep keep the image converged due to drift, but that only becomes an issue as the CRTs age. Drift isn't that bad on a newer CRT projector. The more recent models (circa 1997-2001) don't have as much of a problem with drift.

    Did you use a scaler?

    Neat Defintive Tech facts...

    Speaker is rear ported...

about 2 feet from the wall for every 6 feet from the speakers.

Its better to get them away from side walls than to have equal distance apart - but if you can accomplish 15" + from the side walls and maintain equal distance apart and from the listener. Then great.

Light toe in, and tilt needed.

    Can you elaborate?

Making small changes to the positioning made a HUGE difference in the sound. When you say 2 feet from the wall for every 6 feet from the speakers, are you referring to the seating position? Or the distance from speaker to opposite wall?

These speakers sound good in my 8.5*10 room, great in a 12*20 room, and WONDERFUL in a 21.5*22 room!

Found another good place to run speaker cable:

Once the drywall is up the speaker wire is 100% hidden.

    Seating Position

Wow. Will be hard to do. If you follow the rule "about 2 feet from the wall for every 6 feet from the speakers," then since I sit approximately 16 feet away then the speakers should be 5 feet from the back wall.

Going to order a screen today. It turns out that since a 140" screen dwarfs the room, a 100" screen would be better suited for my application.

So my dad said on a free saturday (which it was, I had nothing to do) we would go to a hi-fi store and take a look around. Bad idea.

Well, the upgraditis hit both of us and we ended up getting a new FP screen for the projector, a Da-Lite Model C w/CSR. It's on special order and should arrive in a week or two. So, I'm excited...

And then we looked at some Definitive Tech speakers. Turns out the C/L/R3000 is a good match for my BP10B's, but I can't afford it right now, so that will have to wait. But I really liked the speaker and the way it sounded.

    Hi,

I'm looking at the idea of a second sub, probably an SVS. Would like to go with a 25-31PC+ but not sure if it is appropriate for the size of my room, a 21.5*22 room with 8 foot ceiling. I'd like to know if such a sub would be adequate for the room size or not:

    http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-cyl-plpow3.cfm

Also looking to get an outboard scaler for the projector.

Anybody have experience with one of these?

Finally, would Outlaw M2200 monoblocks be a good match for the Definitive Tech BP10B speakers I currently have? Anybody here have experience or heard anything good/bad about Outlaw products? Thanks!
