Speaker Positioning

I am moving into a new house so I need to find a position for my rear speakers. The problem is that there is only a flat wall behind the couch, no side walls. One side is a door opening and the other side is the opening to stairs. I know I could always place them on speaker stands but there is only 4 feet on either side before the openings so i would like to avoid losing that space. I thought about installing the back speakers to the ceiling but i have never done this so i am not sure what the sound is going to be like... or even what angle i should be pointing them at. Any ideas?

FYI iam using Polk RM6750 speakers and a Pioneer VSX-D912 receiver.

rear speakers on back wall and speakers on stands or floorstanding speakers for side speakers.

Well, i am trying to avoid placing the rear spearker (from a 5.1) on the wall directly behind the couch. from experience the sweet spot always seems to be at the front of the couch, this sitting back is not an option. this is why i was thinking of mounting them from the ceiling.

Mounting them on the ceiling may look kind of funny, but it'll work.
