Hi everyone,
The g/f and I just received our associates degrees and are moving away to finish school. For our graduation gift we are getting a TV. Can you all please suggest something based upon the following criteria:

Budget: $1,000 to $1,300

Size: 42" - 50"

Questions -
What is the difference between 1080p and 1080i?
What contrast ratio should we be considering/is higher always better?
What televisions have a higher chance of experiencing burn in?
What other equipment (cables) do we need to experience High Definition?

Thanks,
Adam

My TV died 2 weeks ago, so I picked up one of these:
    http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/tacpassets-images/models/42hl67/docs/42hl67_spec.pdf

List is $1399, I found it locally for $1080 out the door. It is only 720p, but after looking at many TV's, it seemed the 720p sets always looked better on SD signals. Most of the programming here is SD, so that was one of my main concerns. As far as HD, I watch from aprox. 14ft away, and at anything over about 8 ft., it was hard to tell any difference between 720p and 1080p.

My favorite TV's are Pioneer plasmas. Just beautiful picture. I play a lot of video games so Im worried about burn in but I hear a lot that its not much of an issue anymore.

Pioneer's 42" plasma is $1400 and thats the one I plan on buying one day.

Walmart has some pretty good buys on several as well. They have a Sanyo 50" plasma for $1400 and a Phillips 50" plasma for $1500.

Walmart has 50" Sanyo plasmas for $1400 and 42" Sanyo LCD's for $1000.
