I just picked up a used pre and the guy was telling me how good SACDs sounded. Don't you need like a 5 channel input for SACD, or is that just for DVD-A?

SACDs and DVD-As will not transfer digitally over optical or coax. It's a copy protection thing. So you get three options.
1. Use analog outs from the player to transfer each decoded channel to the pre.
2. Use proprietary digital connections like denonlink.
3. Use HDMI. This is new. And I haven't tried it. So maybe someone can chime in to how standard it is now. -

Right...but with analog out, aren't there five channels? and if so, how do you get them into a pre (unless it has a 5 channel analog input? And while I'm confusing myself, do you play SACD with surround speakers as well? -
SACD sounds best in 2 channel, IMNSHO. Just use the left and right analog connections and you're good to go.
IF you have to try the multi-channel route and want to use the analog outs, you will need an AVR or pre/pro with matching inputs.Political Correctness'.........defined

SACD and DVDA rarely are allowed to be transferred over a dig cable. Rights management. They always provide the analog outputs via rca on the back though.
