ok I've been looking all over the internet and all I can find is the oled tv. I want to know what is coming out that all the tv's I sell at work are dropping in price like crazy. I dont mean a couple hundred bucks I"m talking over a thousand. this time last year we were selling the Bravia 720p version for 2999 now its selling for $1698. thats cheaper than the boxing day price we had on the last year model. Am I missing something????? We have 50 inch plasmas for 1800 bucks this price dropping is crazy

This is how it goes with all electronics... Manufacturers find cheaper ways to produce the product. Demand diminishes at the original MSRP. More and more competitors release comparable product lines for cheaper. Prices go down.

1080p is taking over. All of the 720p/1080i stuff has been dropping for a while now.

I would imagine it is just a preemptive price drop before the new units come out. It is tough to sell last years model when this years model is cheaper and has more features.

When I worked in retail this was normal before new pieces came out. You would see a $3000 tv being replaced by a better $2499 one so they would sell the old for $2000.

if you can get 1080p on one of those deeply discounted TV's. it might be a good time to snag one.

The new Samsungs are about to be released ... the 71 series LCD 25,000:1 contrast ratio / 120hz refresh and the 81 series LED LCD with 100,000:1 contrast ratio. The new Sony XBR4/5 are about to released in October I believe and the 1080P Pioneer Plasmas with super high contrast ratios are due in September ....

so current models are going to be squashed in way of picture quality in the next few months.

High contrast LCDs what a joke, if they tested them correctly these numbers wouldn't be nearly that high.

Amen. My Mit has much less contrast ratio than most LCD's or DLP's, and it blows them away in PQ.

Economy of scale. The tooling required for the initial run of any assembly line factors high in the total cost of production. At some point, those 720p panels have already paid for their tooling, and the cost is exponentially lower.

I don't think that the pixel bump from 720 to 1080 will incur too much a premium for too long. The panels are essentially the same, . . just a sandwich with different meat. Glass, size, and production line remains much the same. Admittedly, the panel drivers will need to be more capable.

Just picked up a new 50'' Panny Pro Plasma to replace last years 42", for 1300. the **** is BIG. How can anyone with internet access say no to that?

If Oled makes it, and it's price is right, I'll rotate the 50 to the bedroom in a few years and put the 42 in the bathroom

Seven years ago, I remember eyeing a 37" CRT Sony Wega for $1600 and thinking, "whoa, wouldn't that be nice."

Our local Best Buy just expanded their TV section three-fold. They must have at least 80 flat panel TVs on display compared to 30 or so just a few weeks back. Hopefully more TVs = more competition between brands = lower prices across the board!

Fatchow, you sure on that 37in sony CRT? Last I checked the largest sizes sony made in CRTS were a 34in widescreen, 36in 4:3 and a 40in 4:3.

As for all the new sets, I'll buy when one can beat my 34XBR CRT...still can't find a set that can match it's picture quality no matter the price. The new pioneers are said to be quite good though, the so called "sed killers".

I dont even want to know how heavy that would be and how much heat would be coming out the back

I was educated to this as being fact when I looked into maybe upgrading my old 65 inch Diamond Mits. The LCD and DLP offerings where not comparable to the pic I had and still have.

Vizio 47 in 1080p and newly relased 52in are kings of bargain. Im a Sharp fan myself, but these are very nice and are cheap for future proofed HD-Disc viewing. Really makes a diff in the pic with blu/ hd discs

You are correct. It was a 36" Sony Wega 4:3. I currently have a 30" Samsung Widescreen CRT and I can barely make out the fonts on the PS3 but an upgrade is not high priority right now. Maybe Xmas or afterwards. It is exciting to watch the price drops.
