I am curious about playing my SACDs and DVDAs via my Pioneer Elite 79avi to my (incoming) 84txsi receiver via the 'i link' that I have read about. first off...WTH is an i link? and is there any advantage or benefit and does anyone here have that set up? TIA

I love how music can brighten up a bad day. -
I-link...aka the reason I bought my 47Ai....hahahaha.
The benefit if I-link is that you can send DVD-A and SACD signal over it with one cable as opposed to 6 analog cables. You should also be able to do bass management and other fun processing if you choose to with your receiver. If I recall correctly the Elites can send DSD over I-link to as supposed to converting it to PCM...assuming the receiver can decode it.
I purchased my player 4 years ago and still haven't been able to use the I-link feature. -
Thanks Engatz. A lot of info there but wondering how it sounds compared to optical, HDMI or analog.Sharp Elite 70

And that is why you shouldn't trust spell check.
Your lucky having a Pio rcvr, most brands don't support I-link. My B&K was supposed to and actually has the plug for it but it isn't connected. I know Anthem and Integra Research do but I don't see myself spending $5000+ for a pre especially with all the new formats and connections not being set in stone.
HDMI pretty much killed I-link it can do everything I-link can + video and newer audio formats. -

Ahhhh. So I guess the only advantage would be SACD over i link then as the Pioneer is an HDMI receiver...? No sonic advantage over HDMI as far as cd or DVDA are concerned with the i link...?Sharp Elite 70

I believe HDMI can do SACD DSD as well so there would be no advantage. Whether in your specific situation there would be a advantage of going I-link for any source I can't say but there shouldn't be. It kinda depends how your rcvr process each input, for example if it could accept DSD over i-link but not HDMI then there would be a benefit, but that would all be in specific implementation.
HDMI is capable of doing everything I-link can and more.
