I had thought about giving the CDA-9887 a try. Looks like Alpine is on the right track again, at least with this unit....or so I thought. I have looked over the owner's manual that I downloaded from the European Alpine website. I also read this review....#30...Link
.... At this time I would definately go with the CD7100.Alpine: CDA-7949
Alpine: PXA-H600
Alpine: CHA-S624, KCA-420i, KCA-410C
Rainbow: CS 265 Profi Phase Plug / SL 165
ARC Audio: 4150-XXK / 1500v1-XXK
JL Audio: 10W6v2 (x2)

Go with the eclipse. I just got over the horrible experience of using a cda-9885. The thing had crappy sound and it wasn't able to drive my amplifiers to their full potential. When I replaced it with a jvc kd-avx33 the whole system just pounded so much harder and so much clearer. I had all these weird problems with the alpine with the bass cutting out as the volume increased which is completely gone with the new HU. When I called alpine, they refused to believe their head unit was doing it but it is obvious that's what it was. Stay away from that crap.

WHAT??? Alpine's always been the top-of-the line head units. What happened to them?
-
I believe Alpine stopped being on top a few years back. Maybe not in sales, but with the product that they were putting out. I believe this HU (9887) is a very nice unit, just not exactly what I was looking for. SQ wise, it looks like you can build your system around it. As time goes on you expect new products to be better. Seems like the user interface is not as simple as before, and the display does not do what the CDA-9835 or CDA-7998 did. I think it has alot to do with how much smaller the display is.Alpine: CDA-7949

Whatever, Alpine sucks. I told you already that it just doesn't make your system play as loud and hard as some other manufacturers.
-
I would look into how your system is tuned....you may have had a bad unit as well. What unit did you have before the Alpine? Did you reset your gains? What are your settings on your amps (did you have your bass boost)? To say that the whole company sucks due to the possibility of a bad HU does not make any sense.Alpine: CDA-7949

What did you pay for it? I need a new HU soon. And, does it have a aux in?
-
I believe that it does, & no adapters are needed. You can set the gains on it too. This is the way it is on my CD7000. You also have the option of adding another one with an adpater.Alpine: CDA-7949

I had thought about giving the 880PRS a shot, but opted for a unit that is easier to use, and one that does not have a history of noise problems, and blown internal fuses.Alpine: CDA-7949

dose anyone know how good the ipod controle on the 7100 compares to the alpine or pioneer.SR 4 Life

The ipod control is the best on the alpine. But the sound certainly isn't. It absolutely will not drive your amps as hard as the eclipse. I know this firsthand.
