Good find on your LG combo, I read the do's and dont's over at AVS which kept me away from it. I ended up with the Tosh A1 and the Sony BDP S1 that plays everything minus CDs, how you like that. Anyway enjoy the LG, Im sure a firmware upgrade maybe out or coming down the pipeline to give you MC PCM. If it is, the guys over at AVS will have it posted for sure.

Thanks. It is nice but I really need that multichannel over HDMI. How do you like the Sony? It does PCM over HDMI, right?

Ok. I am really having a difficult time finding a Blu Ray player that does multichannel PCM over HDMI and decodes True HD DD+ etc. Any suggestions?

Darla, your article is hopelessly out of date. And that means really good news for you. Since that article was written, the ps3 has gotten some really good updates including:

---Upscaling of legacy ps games and dvds to full 1080p.
    ---Better support for 720p displays.
---Support for 24hz native frame per second cadence of movies. (Need a display that supports this for no more 3:2 pulldown artifacts.)
---Support for full range color (This is in addition to the high-bit color depth for hdmi 1.3 capable hdtvs.) This enables blacker blacks and whiter white ranges for computer monitors (or some hdtvs with the option) to display properly.
    ---Support for Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super White.
---DNLA media streaming from a PC.

There is also some increase in the audio quality for SACDs but not having any, I'm not sure what the upgrade does.

And the ps3 always did TrueHD. But DD+ isn't what you should be looking for, it's uncompressed LPCM tracks that are every bit the equal of TrueHD and come from studios like Disney and Sony. These two are true lossless formats. DD+ and all the alphabet soup in between compress and lose the quality of the original master recording. DD+ only offers a marginal improvement over vanilla DD and DTS. The third lossless option is DTS-Master Audio. But support for this is still in flux across all the hardware in the market and only Fox currently uses it for its movies. So hopefully when there is standard support, the ps3 will get another nice update to play it.

The only thing the ps3 lacks compared to the high end HD players you can currently get on the market is analog outs for the hdmi challenged crowd. But since you're looking for advanced hdmi connectivity, this doesn't apply to you. Have fun playing with your new toy. Of course, many of the advanced features may have to wait until you get a TV upgrade. But it's good that they're there waiting for you.

If you're selling your LG, you should be up to 10 free blu-rays by now.

And you don't even have to get back into video games, nobody's forcing you to anyways, although the dragon battle game that uses the six-axis controller motion sensor is coming out next month...;)

Thanks Cheddar. I do have a 1080p set (not HDMI 1.3). Glad to see it will even be better than I read. Anty recommendations for First Person Shooter games?

Resistance Fall of Man is a release game, but it's still about the best you can get right now for the ps3. It has a more open play with greater options than Gears of War for moving around and flanking enemies etc. And it has a great selection of weapons, so many that it needs like 8 slots just for the standard ones before you unlock the others. And airburst granades are your friend...

For future FPS games that should all be coming out in the next year or so:

Killzone 2 -- Yes, it's in game footage...

    http://www.gametrailers.com/player/21504.html

MGS 4 -- Technically a 3rd person shooter, but who cares when it looks this good...

    http://www.gametrailers.com/player/22702.html

Haze -- Kind of overshadowed by the others...but still looks good in its own right...

Oh and epic is releasing UT3 for the ps3...

Should be enough to get you started...but I thought you're not into games anymore...;)

I am open minded. It just seems that they are all so complicated anymore. Whatever happened to simple games like Galaga and Defender? Tetris or even my all time fave - Arkanoid? Simple fun. Now you have to give up your life to play anything anymore they are so involved. I do like the Rainbow Six games though.

In that case, hook your baby up to the ethernet, sign up for the playstation network at no charge, and take a look at nucleus, superstardust HD, and blastfactor. The full games are less than 10 bucks each. And nucleus and blastfactor have free demos. Also be on the lookout for everyday shooter demoed at E3. They have a lot of other demos in the store, including two playable levels from resistance. There's other simple but fun games out there. Be sure to check out the little big planet video for a really off the wall game that allows anyone to easily design their own levels...coming soon...

With the latest firmware update to the Sony BDP S1 it does decode true hd and dd+, my AVR decodes it at MC PCM @ 48 and 96khz. Good on you with the PS3, I plan to pair one up with the new projector setup here shortly. Resistance of Man as Cheddar mentioned is a sick game, I demoed it in store only though. I cant wait to get it on the 126 inch screen. Sony has given the end user of the PS3 some powerful features via firmware to include 1080/24p support. Enjoy.
