About a week ago I bought a used Carver AV-634. 4 channel amp, with 2 channels bridgeable. I bought it with the thoughts of using the bridged channel for a center channel. It actually has some limited crossover capability on the bridged channel for use with a passive sub.
Well, me being short sighted and otherwise giddy becuase I was getting a pair of SDAs from the same guy, completely forgot about the width of the Carver faceplate. Since the SDAs replaced my RTi4s in my HT/music system, I have a pair of RTi4s as wells as a pair of old S4s sitting in a closet unused.
I thought about maybe hooking it up to my computer and getting rid of the crappy computer speakers or hooking up in bed room. In either case I will need a preamp and ideally a tuner. Honestly, I would probably be satisfied with an AVR in either application.
So, my question...is this amp really worth the trouble?
If it is, are there any suggestions for my preamp issue. Unless this is really a fantastic amp, and I just don't know it, I certainly don't need (translation - want to pay for) a top shelf preamp. Or, should I just get rid of it and look for a used AVR to satisfy my needs. It seems like it could be a really useful amp, but realistically I will probably never use it for more than a 2 channel amp or 2 plus sub (but even passive subs seem pretty rare anymore unless you build your own.)
