Hi, I am wondering if any of you gentleman would have one or two of the silver faced SL1000s for sale? I also have a question. First some background. I have had my model 10s since 1981. They orignaly came with the Peerless tweeter but my crossovers were upgraded about 7 years ago by Polk and I went with the silver faced SL1000. I worked in the electronics biz for several years and was able to listen to many different speakers but the 10s always sounded better to me even agianst some high priced speakers. Several of my fellow hi brow workers were surprised by how good they sounded agianst some expensive speakers. My equitment has changed over the years from HK to NAD to Rotel and now Bel Canto Ev02, Denon 1650AR, Analysis Plus Oval 9 and Cardas Neutral Reference. IC. No matter what the change I could hear it on the 10s. I can hear differences between amps, CD players, speaker cable and ICs but the difference in power cords was a surprise. I kept thinking my god its a power cord give me a break!! In the last few months I have tried a few different speakers in my home. First up VR2s. I thought the 10s were more exiting to listen to and had a bigger soundstage both vertical and horizontal. Next Vandersteen 2CE Signatures. I lived with these for three months and they are very good but I brought the 10s up after 3 months and was surprised to hear the 10s sound more open. The Vandersteens sound a little distant and dark but very good. Then came the LSI15. I was told the LSI9 was the best by a Polk rep but tried the 15s. Good detail but very directional and the bass seemed seperated from the rest of the music. The sounded lke the music was coming from around the speaker verses the 15s which seemed to come from the speaker. Each to their own taste wise but I thought the 15 sounded lmore like a really good HT speaker to me. Afte comparing the two my wife said to me well the 10 sound more like a real person singin and live music. After 26 years with the same speakers I WOULD LIKE NEW SPEAKERS!! Yet the 10s still seem to hold their own with some very good speakers. Enter the RTA 12B. I like these and they came with the new 1094 tweeter but after switching tweeters about 5 times several of us liked the silver faced SL1000 as it seemed more open. Here are my questions. I know the Peerless was first in the 10s then a black SL1000 then the silver SL1000 and then the SL2000. What was the difference between the black and silver SL1000?? The 2000 seems to take alot of abuse. A friend has later 10s with the 2000s and it seems thiner and brighter then my 1000s. Is this true. other then size what is the difference between the SL 1000 and the SL2000? Thoughts?? thanks, keith

To me, the Peerless were the best. Did you not like the Peerless? Thats what I would put in.

The silver (sl1000) and black dome (sl2000), I found bright, harsh and unatural. A great tweeter compared to most, but not as smooth as the Peerless.

Whats upgrades were made to the crossover?

Hi, Thanks for the reply I am not sure what Ken all did but he is the man!! I have not had a 1000 and a 2000 next to each other. Do you think they sound the same?? I thought the 2000 was more aggresive. I do have one Peerless on the shelf but i need another one to do the switch.. Anyone have an orignal Peerless for sale??? Thanks, keith

Install the peerless in one and the silver in the other and do an A/B test.

If you want to buy something, post in the WTB portion of this forum.

I pushed the report post button. I am legally blind and those little blue boxes are hard for me to read. So lets try again.
Well I had one Peerless on the shelf and borrowed one from a friend and i think you are right. I tried them in the 10s and 12s. They may or may not be a s open as the SL1000 but they are very musical and sound right. I am looking for one or two or three more of the orignal ones. One thing that was confusing is the first black Peerless were called HF. I have sales book from 81 or 82 and it has a whole deal on the SL1000 but shows a black tweeter. In other words to me it appeared there were two SL 1000s. One black and one silver and then the HF. from what I was able to find out they started calling the HF the SL1000 and when they switched to silver they still called it the SL1000. I think???? Thanks, keith
