Ern Dog needs help!

Below is a private message between Ern Dog and myself. He needs some help resolving the question as to how how can tame the brightness of the RTi10s. Is this possible with equipment or should he just buy different sounding speakers?
My take: The Soundstage Tube amp is known for being bright. I would recommend a used Dodd on Audiogon for $400 or so. However, even with the addition of the Dodd, the Rti10s will still sound bright . . . because they are! You have to find the point when you new speakers that your ear will enjoy or new equipment that will be more synergistic with your current pair of speakers. Both avenues will add up to quite a bit of cash.
Personally, get rid of the soundstage pre. And find a better alternative. If that doesn't fix the problem, buy new speakers. That way you have good components that you can match to new speakers.
Regarding tubes, be careful to make sure the tube preamp can drive the SS amp. I ran into this problem with my Rogue Metis and my NAD C272. I replaced the NAD with a PS Audio amp and suddenly I was in a whole other league.
Good luck,

Solidsqual,
That's a long story, but I'll give you the condensed version. Ever since I got the Rti10's I've been focused on getting warm sounding gear to nuetralize the Rti bright tone. I started with the warm sounding B&K amp, then the tube pre (instead of using my HK635), and just recently the NAD cdp. Each step added a little more warmth. My lattest effort has been rolling in some different tubes. I can only barely tell any difference between different tubes.
I'm still not 100% satisfied as the rig still sounds a tad bright. My latest thoughts have been to trade out the Rti10's for something else... Lsi15, Dynaudio, etc.
I was excited to read your post and immediately surfed the web for PS Audio/Totem gear to get more info and check prices. Wow Expensive!
Do you have any suggestions for my rig to give it more warmth without having to get rid of the Rti's?
Ernie

This problem was presented to me before last November. It seems that there is no replacement or upgrade for the tweeter in the RTi series, however, it was suggested that putting a resister in line with the positive terminal would help tame it.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~
