sub box question

Quick question, When building a sub box, do I need to glue the pieces together, then use screws and then caulk the seams? And will I need some clamps that I can hold the box together with or since I'm using screws can I just glue and screw and call it a day?
Also, for glue and caulk will liguid nails work just fine for both?
Thanks,
Howie

If i was doing it, glue the wood together, predrill the holes for the screws, fill the holes with glue, clamp it all use some screws with lots of thread. Seal it with a good sealer.2013 Toyota Prius

I definitely recommend pre-drilling the holes but I dont fill them with glue. Nothing wrong with doing that, but I dont think its necessary.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Well cutting my box sides with a dry wall square and a circular saw bit me in the **** as I noticed my box doesn't exactly line up. I was off 1/16 inch on some of the cuts and it is a pain in the **** to do anyway
But I am getting good with a router and I did manage to make a perfect mount for the sub. So now I feel pretty confident I can pull this off well (first real project made from wood). So I think I'm going to scrap what I've done and get some new MDF and rent a table saw (if I can or find someone at work who has one). Plus this gives me a reason to play with my router some more!
When I did make the speaker mount I did pre drill with a counter sink bit and that worked great. I didn't glue the holes, just the two pieces of wood. I probably used screws every 1.5 inches. Wasn't too bad of a job.

can i ask wheather....if making a subwoofer box...need to calculate it mesurement right??then X 1728 to have it q-befit..some thing like that..right???

Kenji - I have no clue what you are asking, but all I did was build a box a little bit bigger than on this website (car audio -> sub box plans) and this was more by mistake than anything else. I think mine is 16.5" wide, 14.5" high and 11" deep on the outside of the box, the inside would be 15" wide, 13" deep and 8.75" deep (I used 2 sheets to support the sub).
I put in my sub yesterday and it sound pretty good. I will wait a while before turning it up much as suggested by Polk though. It really seems to go well with my SR6500's up front, go figure ;-)

Length x width x height divided by 1728 = square footagepolkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

that is what i tried to talking about..:D thanz guru..:) -
Quick question. While building my box I did manage to split the MDF a few times **** it together. I used #8 wood screws about 1.5" long. Was this due to not pre-drilling deep enough (I used a #8 countersink bit)? Or should I have used #6 screws?
I may build a 3rd box (first one failed, second work works but is a bit high for my trunk) and would like to not split the MDF this time :-) -
Might wanna try #6 screws this time. I use them and pre drill the holes and that keeps the splittage down to a minimum. Chances are tho youre gonna go in a little crooked ever once in a while and you may get a little split. Not the end of the world.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005
