A buck seventy? whoa! I like these pricing strategy!
Looks promising, but at this point, isn't worthwhile to wait for a decent HD-DVD or BR player, that can do SD upconvert over HDMI?I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -

As a DVD player, there're better choices. However, as an universal player that offers all those features, there're nothing out there within that price range. -
I'm thinking about it. Its slim (cabinet space is an issue for me), and I wouldn't mind having the famed Oppo quality for my standard DVDs.

I have the Sony 400 dics changer, and the sound is kinda edgy. How does the Oppo compare to the sony for SACD?
Thanks BenPlease. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
Thanks

I found the below post on avsforum.com as a response from Oppo on an inquiry to the 980's audio performance....The tonal qualities of the DV-980H should surpass that of the DV-970HD. The main reason for this is that we hand selected new capacitor and resistor manufacturers, redesigned the DAC layout, are using an improved Cirrus Logic CS4361 DAC and the latest, heavily modified MTK solution for increased audio decoding fidelity. The end result is a system that is more robust and refined over our previous DVD player designs.

Hmmm... I should give one of those a try. Look for my 970 on the flea market soon.

madmaxVinyl, the final frontier...
Avantgarde horns, 300b tubes, thats the kinda crap I want...

Looks like I found this thread too late, my 970 shipped yesterday! :rolleyes:Oh, you hate your job? Why didn't you say so? There's a support
group for that. It's called EVERYBODY, and they meet at the bar.

what am I missing here... what is so good about this dvd player? - no disrespect inteded.
I bought a new panasonic dvds53k and its hdmi interface is 1.3a upscaling to 1080p for 89.00 and after connecting one cable to the TV and one digital coax to the receiver I am able to get amazing soound and picture.
My hdmi cable is also panasonic and certified and my tv can support 1080p.
No comparison to my other tv that can only go to 1080i/720p.
So why pay more when for 89.00 you can get very good picture and 7.1 capable sound.Current HT setup

Because it can play SACD and transmit the DSD data over the HDMI connection. Not to mention HDCD decoding on HDCDs.

Good points Danny. Also the oppo players are rewnowned for there superb picture quality, Even though the panasonic may appear to have a good picture it may and probablly will pale in comparasion to the oppos picture and sound both if past results are any indication of this player.Because it can play SACD and transmit the DSD data over the HDMI connection. Not to mention HDCD decoding on HDCDs.
Lots of people think these oppos are pretty cheesy looking as far as build quality goes. And i have to agree with these assements even though I own one, But I didnt buy it to put in a rack to look pretty. And its dvd and audio abilitys are for the money involved, very hard if not impossible to beat.
Personally I think that to break into audiophile and or videophile
quality reproduction was very expensive until oppo came along which is great, because now they are forcing the other companys out there to step up to the plate, and make higher quality players for less money which only benefits the consumer.
REGARDS SNOWWell, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all

Here's the review of the Oppo 980 that I've come across.
-
Do you know if the 1080P upscaling is available with the component outputs?
Upscaling? Huh?

According to Oppo's website, the Oppo 980 features....Component video output with progressive scan (Up-converting over component output is only available for unencrypted DVD discs such as home video and consumer-created contents. Most commercially pressed DVD discs are CSS-encrypted and will be limited to 480i/480p output over component. HDMI output is protected with HDCP and has no such restriction.) -
I really only want a SACD player & DVD-Audio player.
Which was the reason I puchase my 970 a couple of months back. I'd get the 980 if SACD and DVD-A playback is what you are after. -
Just an update....
Audiophile Audition just published a review on the Oppo 980. I think Stereophile is also working on a review for its January 2008 issue.
