Banana plug connectors

Just purchased the RM6600s. Am connecting with Acoustic Research Banana Plugs HT407 and 12 guage speaker wire HT222. Concern is the connectors protrude about 1/4 " past the bottom of the speakers, even with the posts turned to the side (I hope it was alright to turn the posts). Obviously the problem is that the speakers will not sit flat on anything. I want to have good connectors and wire, what should I do?
