help with speaker placement

Greetings again. I have just rearanged my living room to what I think will be a better suited setup for HT. I do both h/t and music on this setup. My room is 17 long by 13 wide. I used to have the front stage setup on the short wall but the problem was the wall was only about half the room width and the room opened up from there into the kitchen. This setup didn't allow me to spread out my front speakers whatsoever infact they had to be tucked right up next to my tv on one side and the side wall on the other. I now have the tv set up on the long wall and am playing around with front speaker positioning for optimal results.

I have read on here about the "sweet spot" and would like to find it in my setup but the only problem is I don't exactly know what sound I am really looking for to find that spot. I am sort of an audio newbie and have not been to many live events either. I do however enjoy listening to cd's on two channel and would like to hear it at it's best.

The best way I can describe my setup now is to give some measurements and see if anyone can let me know if I am at least in the ballpark.

From where I am sitting: Left and right speakers are 10.5 feet away on either side of the tv. TV is 9 feet dead in front of me. There is 8 feet exactly in between the two speakers. I have toed the speakers in somewhat but am not sure how far to go. The way it is right now...vocals seem to be comming from the tv(as in straight in front of me) while instruments are heard all the way across from one speaker to the other. I like this sound better than it was before with the speakers so close together. It seems to be spread out more.

I don't know if anyone can input anything here as to the measurements I gave. Maybe my speaks are too far apart now? Like I said....I'm not exactly sure how it should sound as I have never listened to a reference system. Any input would be great. Thanx.

In regards to the sweet spot you should know when you have it by changing the distance between the right and left speakers. I just set up my LSi15's for HT and they are 8' apart which seems to be the best distance. I had to check my center channel speaker cause i thought it was on when using stereo. The LSi15's are angled in making the sound blend in very nice. You should make sure your right, center and left speakers are all the same distance from your prime listening position. I guess there are ideal set ups but we have to adjust to what we have to work with. Good luck......

I know what you mean by having to check and see if your center speaker was on during two channel. That's what mine sounds like as well, just for vocals though. The rest of the instruments kind of dance around across the speakers (actually the drums sound like they are in the center as well only further back than the singer). I think it sounds quite nice this way so I'm gonna leave it as is. To me it sounds as if the vocalist is in the center of the stage and the instruments are placed on either side and behind. Thank you for your reply.
