Does anyone know the size (thickness) of MDF used in SDA 1.2tl's? I am thinking of trying to build a pair. Financial reasons, I can spread the cost out over months.

What you need are the interior dimensions. Volume is critical.

Have you figured out how much the parts will cost? Even if you have measurements and try to go cheap (used drivers + shipping) there is a HUGE failure rate with DOA drivers. A rough guesstimate for drivers + xo parts is 75% of the cost for a complete used pair. That's not counting MDF, end caps, stain, sandpaper, internal bracing, glue and fabric.

Yes I have. The thing is, Most of the SDA SRS's and 1.2's in Ohio or close to here have been north of $2k. I am looking at just under half of that and I don't have to come up with all of it at once, which is important to me. With my current income level, buying one or 2 drivers at a time the way to go.

If you have the correct tools and a good working knowledge of building speakers and you can get some of the proprietary info direct from Polk this should be a fun and rewarding project. If you really don't have any experience or the correct tools, etc. It's going to be frustrating and might not be ideal the first time you fire them up.

    Good luck.

    Thanks Heiney,

I have a friend who has a workshop. He makes furniture which he sales in a local wood working shop where he works teaching various woodworking techniques. He has built speaker Cabinets before. I have an email in to polk requesting info and Ben has promised to be a resource as well. Between the three of them and my enthusiasm, which is about all I can contribute, I think we will make it through. I think I have already driven Ben nuts already and i am only going to pick up the wood today.

Well just got a response from Polk CS. They no longer have the plans for the old SDA's nor do they stock the crossovers, and Passives. Those I will have to find on the used market. Makes things a little less certain, but I am not discouraged yet.

Well yes, we could have told you that already. The PR is going to be the hardest to find. I watch e-bay a lot over the past 4-5 years and have only seen a handful of SRS PR's FS. X-over's can be made, it's tricky but it can be done. This really is a much harder project than it seems. It's one thing to have the raw parts and just needing cabinets, but having to source everything may not be cost or time effective. Keep us posted and again good luck.

2 10's work extremely well for the custom SDA's. They move faster, and hit harder. You may have to weight the 10's a little to go extremely deep. With room gain I have decided not to change the weight of my passives, and I am totally satisfied. I am running 4 10's, and 16 MW's per cabinet in my custom SDA's
