Well, I'm a Polkie now. Got a pair of Monitor 10's today off the local CL. First Polks I've owned, always been kind of partial to JBL. I've got to say these things sound great. Now I want some 12's:D

hey, george, can you send that rotel back....my 10s need it!

Welcome Big. Ive seen you over at AK a lot. Congrats on your find. I have several pairs of JBLs also L-100Ts L-80T3s L-112s L100 centurys etc. But the polks-SDA SRS 1.2TLs are used as my mains because they simply sound better than anything else I currently have
REGARDS SNOWWell, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all -

Shhhhhhhh! don't tell anyone.. we're trying to keep the sound of vintage Polk Audio speakers a secret.
do you know the secret handshake yet?
congrats on your monitor 10's
enjoy!!PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Classic loudspeaker w/ classic Polk sound. A great start to any audio education.
JBL used to be a benchmark speaker but those days have long since passed them by....much like Boston Acoustics and Infinity.
Happy Listening!CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
Mark, how about Acoustic Research? esp speakers they've put out recently? Was AR ever decent? Have they kept up their quality?
Why does it seems the 70's were when alot of classic speakers came out, that are still sought after today?PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Thanks guys, for the warm welcome. These are some fine sounding speakers indeed.
I've already started searching for spare parts as I intend to keep these around for a very long time. I guess you could say that I'm well on my way to becoming a Polkaholic!:)

AR? Certainly, but again, not now. I think you just have to be able to enjoy and appreciate vintage sound. Most folks have fond memories of what brought them to this stage and that's usually because of the early days of Hi-Fi. There's way more crap on the market today then there was back then.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? In trying to figure out what model 10's I have, I pulled two mw 6503 and a pr.
Both of the mw's were made in 11/89, the pr is dated 11/89, and the xo has a date of 10/89
Serial #'s on the cabinets are 204727/204728. So I'm thinking that these are 10B's. Would that be correct?
Here's a pic of one of the tweeters
-
i don't think there were may different models of monitor 10's. you have the SL2000 tweeters. a silk dome replacement tweeter is currently available from Polk.. order two of them and tell them you are a club polk member for a discount. it's well worth the cost. the new tweeters sound better.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

if you're interested in the vintage and classic AR speakers, here's the best on-line resource:

Yes, an example the early AR acoustic suspension speakers (the AR-1, IIRC) is in the Smithsonian. They were an extremely significant development. -

Sounds like my AR-3's. :-) Look awful but sound pretty good. Bass of the AR-3 and AR-3a is exceptional even by modern standards.

I have a pair of AR 910s (in addition to my 2.3s and my SDA-SRSs.) Each tower has a pair of 12s (one firing out the back, an 8, a pair of 6 1/2s and a 1 inch dome tweeter. They still sound really good after about 20 years. AR made great speakers for many years. My 910s are in the same league as y 2.3s but don't sound as full as y big boys.
Take care, Phil -
Well, after a week of listening only to these monitors 10's, I've decided to pass them along. Today I listened to my JBL L100t3's and 4311's right after the Polks and decided that in the interest of space conservation, the Monitor 10's have to go bye-bye.

Wow, that was quick! Well, I guess that's the nature of the biz!

They sound just fine but after comparing, I prefer my JBL's. Especially the t3's.
Also space is a factor. I really don't have the room to have 3 larger size sets of speakers sitting around waiting their turn in the mix. Add that to a stack of 3 receivers, 4 amplifiers, 2 TT's, cd players and a few other odds and ends sitting here covered up in the bedroom, and something has got to go.
If the 10's cabs were in better shape, I'd probably think twice about letting them go.

What you really need is a pair of SDAs any of the SDA SRS series would do the trick Of course that wouldndt help much on the space thing.
Those L100T-3s are nice though, I have a pair of L80T-3s that are sitting around collecting dust, They are one of my favorite speakers. I need to either buy a pair of L100T-3s to make a second 5.1 system or sell my L80T-3s at some point even though it is very hard for me to sell things I am more of a collector than a seller lol.
Also even though you are getting rid of your polks dont be a stranger here, Its not neccesary to own polks to be a member here. We all share the love of music no matter what speakers we own.

Thanks, I will. There are more Polks in my future somewhere. I've already learned enough to know that they are a very good sounding speaker.

Congrats on the 10s. If your into upgrading them, I redid the crossovers on my 10As and what a difference. Smoother highs and more defined mids. Well worth the time and money.CARPE CEREVISI!!
