Just saw Sonic Youth at Union Park

Just saw Sonic Youth perform Daydream Nation at the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago. Very good show. That is such a seminal album.

Weird: I was originally about 25 yards off the sound board (maybe 50 yards from the stage), and the acoustics were horrible. Everybody was yelling "Turn it up!" For a band that thrives on noise and feedback, it sure didn't seem right.

After a while I went to get another beer (alas, the beer tents were closed), and, surprisingly, the acoustics were significantly better about 100 yards back from where I was. I could finally feel the music and hear the cacophonous guitar noise that defines that album.

I've certainly experienced dead spots at concerts before, but never to this extreme. I was especially surprised because the venue was just a big open park--I wouldn't think there was anything to substantially affect the acoustics. Beats me.

And oh yeah, Kim Gordon is hot on stage.

I saw Sonic Youth about three years ago and it was effin' amazing. Thurston Moore is a tour de force. And you're right... Kim Gordon is still hot.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Last I saw them was a few years ago at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Legendary place to see any act, but especially good for a band with their sound. Very intimate and very loud :)
